The Netherlands clinched top spot in Group F and set up a highly anticipated Round of 32 meeting with Morocco in Monterrey on 29 June after overcoming Tunisia 3-1 at Kansas City Stadium.

While Ronald Koeman’s men marched on with seven points from their three games, the defeat confirmed a miserable exit for the Eagles of Carthage, who depart North America without a single point.

Early Dutch Blitz Stuns Tunisia

Ronald Koeman’s side wasted no time establishing dominance, needing just three minutes to break the deadlock against their already-eliminated opponents. Denzel Dumfries whipped a dangerous cross into the box aimed at Brian Brobbey, forcing Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri into a desperate defensive interception that he unfortunately sliced into his own net.

Just four minutes later, the Oranje doubled their advantage. A well-worked free-kick found Virgil van Dijk, who headed the ball intelligently back across the face of goal. Brobbey was perfectly positioned to react, bagging his third goal of the tournament from close range to make it 2-0.

Tunisia, who have endured a bruising tournament following heavy defeats to Sweden and Japan, actually had a golden chance to score in the opening moments. Ismael Gharbi found himself well-placed inside the area, but he uncharacteristically side-footed his effort over the bar.

Rain, Resilience, and Response

Following the early double-salvo, Hervé Renard’s Tunisian side spent the majority of the match on the back foot. Early in a rain-soaked second half, the Netherlands came close to extending their lead further, but Skhiri made amends for his earlier error by blocking a powerful effort from Dumfries.

Against the run of play, Tunisia managed to pull themselves back into the contest in the 54th minute. Capitalizing on a momentary lapse in the Dutch defense, Hazem Mastouri was given far too much freedom in the penalty area, rising high to head home Hannibal Mejbri’s corner kick.

Any hopes of a Tunisian comeback were instantly snuffed out, however, as the Dutch responded immediately. Just eight minutes after conceding, Jan Paul van Hecke safely secured the points by beautifully glancing home a pin-point delivery from Tijjani Reijnders to make it 3-1.
