The Malta BMX Association has celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of promoting BMX cycling and skateboarding in Malta.

Founded by John Zammit in 1986, the Association began its activities at the site where the Independence Garden in Sliema stands today. Since then, it has grown into a thriving BMX community and is now based at its purpose-built facility in Pembroke, where competitions and training sessions are regularly held.

As a non-profit organisation, the Malta BMX Association is dedicated to providing safe BMX and skateboarding facilities for young people, encouraging an active lifestyle while offering a positive environment for children and teenagers to develop their skills.

The anniversary was commemorated with a special festival that brought together former riders, current members, parents, children, and supporters of the sport. Addressing those present, Association President John Zammit delivered an emotional speech reflecting on the Association’s 40-year journey and thanking everyone who had contributed to its success. He paid special tribute to his wife and children for their unwavering support throughout the years.

Among the distinguished guests attending the celebration were Joe Cassar, Secretary General of the Maltese Olympic Committee; Hon. Graham Bencini, Shadow Minister for Sport; David Agius, former Shadow Minister for Sport; Team Polti VisitMalta professional road cyclists Aidan Buttigieg and Andrea Mifsud, accompanied by team representative Luca Santini; and Joe Bajada, Secretary General of the Malta Cycling Federation and UCI Voting Delegate.

An exhibition board featuring photographs and memorabilia chronicling the Association’s 40-year history was displayed throughout the event, allowing visitors to relive some of its most memorable moments.

The celebrations concluded with an exciting BMX demonstration, during which numerous riders showcased their talent and versatility across various BMX disciplines, providing a fitting finale to an event celebrating four decades of dedication, community spirit, and sporting excellence.
