Floriana took a major step towards reaching the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League after securing a deserved 2-0 victory over Irish champions Shamrock Rovers in the first leg at the National Stadium.

Goals from debutant Robert Muric on the stroke of half-time and Mustapha Jah midway through the second half handed the Greens a valuable two-goal advantage ahead of next Tuesday’s return leg in Dublin. The winners of the tie will face either Ararat-Armenia or Riga FC in the second qualifying round.

Head coach Daniel Portela handed competitive debuts to summer signings Kauan and Robert Muric, while Gaston Romano, Ange Curtis N’Dri, and Tomislav Gudelj were named among the substitutes.

Shamrock Rovers started brightly and created the first opportunity after 12 minutes when Michael Noonan headed over from close range following a cross by Dylan Watts.

Floriana gradually settled into the match and threatened on 22 minutes when Muric unleashed a powerful effort from outside the area that goalkeeper Ed McGinty tipped behind for a corner.

The Greens continued to grow into the contest and almost broke the deadlock on 28 minutes after a flowing move involving Fede Varela, Jah, and Dervisagic, with the latter’s effort sailing narrowly over the crossbar.

Shamrock responded with a dangerous attack of their own as Jack Byrne set up Noonan, whose initial effort was blocked before Spiteri diverted the rebound behind for a corner. Moments later, Brennan also saw his shot blocked inside the area.

Floriana’s persistence paid off just before the interval. Varela took a quick free-kick to release Muric down the right, and the Croatian winger showed great composure by cutting inside his marker before curling a superb finish beyond McGinty to mark his debut with a goal.

The visitors’ task became even more difficult on 58 minutes when Matthew Healy was sent off after receiving two yellow cards within the space of a minute.

Floriana immediately looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage, with Muric delivering an inviting cross that Kurtalic headed goalwards, only for the effort to be turned behind.

Shamrock Rovers still posed a threat on the counter and nearly equalised on 75 minutes when substitute Maleace Asamoah forced Guilherme Cioletti into an important save from close range.

Floriana responded by extending their lead four minutes later. Muric was again involved, setting up Varela whose shot was parried by McGinty, but Jah reacted quickest to convert the rebound and make it 2-0.

The Greens almost added a third when substitute Tomislav Gudelj attempted an acrobatic overhead kick from Zachary Scerri’s cross, but the effort drifted wide.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Shamrock continued to search for a goal that could have changed the complexion of the tie. Deep into stoppage time, Asamoah struck a dangerous angled effort that was brilliantly cleared off the line by a Floriana defender.

The final whistle confirmed an impressive first-leg victory for Floriana, who now travel to Dublin carrying a healthy two-goal advantage and with one foot in the second qualifying round of Europe’s premier club competition.
