Antoine Griezmann opens up on World Cup memories, MLS ambitions and Orlando City future

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, new Orlando City star Antoine Griezmann shared his thoughts on the tournament, his move to Major League Soccer (MLS) and his ambition to help his new club compete for trophies.

Speaking during “The Next Chapter” event in New York, Griezmann revealed that moving to Orlando City had been a long-term dream and explained why the timing was right for the next stage of his career.

“It has always been a dream and a desire of mine to end my career here. I wanted to arrive in good shape, both physically and mentally.”

The French forward said meeting members of the Orlando City organisation convinced him that the club was the right destination.

“Not long ago I met Muriel, sporting director Ricardo, and the people at the club. I fell in love with Orlando City’s philosophy, while my wife fell in love with the city. We realised this was the perfect moment to take this big step.”

Griezmann Backs Spain Ahead of World Cup Final

When asked about the World Cup final, Griezmann admitted he has strong connections with several players in the Spain national team after sharing the dressing room with them during his career.

“I have more than three former teammates in the Spanish national team. I wish them the best, but I don’t send messages out of superstition.”

The France international revealed he spoke with Marcos Llorente after Spain’s victory over France and believes the occasion is something special for the country.

“I want them to enjoy this moment, because it’s something unique and it might not happen again.”

Griezmann Believes MLS Is Reaching New Heights

Griezmann also praised the growth of MLS, highlighting the arrival of young talent and experienced global stars as evidence of the league’s progress.

“I think the level of the league is much higher than a few years ago. Many talented young players are coming in, many start in MLS and then go to Europe, and at the same time, world-class players are choosing to come here.”

He believes the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 will further increase interest in football across the United States.

“The World Cup also helps a lot. It allows American kids to get passionate about football and start loving this sport.”

Griezmann Reflects on World Cup Pressure

Having experienced the biggest stage in football, Griezmann knows the emotions that come with playing in a World Cup.

“A lot of stress and a huge desire for the match to start. You have a thousand things running through your mind.”

He described the atmosphere of a World Cup match as a mixture of pride, excitement and pressure.

“You walk into the stadium and see flags from every country, different cultures, fans wearing your shirt. It’s a feeling of joy, passion, and pride, but also a lot of tension right up until kickoff.”

Excitement Growing After Orlando City Arrival

After completing his time with Atletico Madrid, Griezmann said he was eager to begin his new adventure in Orlando.

“After finishing the season with Atletico Madrid, I went on vacation with my family, but I already wanted to get back to training, get to know Orlando and my new teammates.”

The former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward added that he has enjoyed his first weeks with the club and is looking forward to competitive action.

“I’ve been here for two weeks and I’m having a great time, both in training and in friendlies. Now I can’t wait to face San Jose in the first official match.”

Griezmann Targets MLS Trophy with Orlando City

The French star made his ambitions clear, saying he wants to make a major impact and help Orlando City reach new heights.

“I want to win the championship, score goals, provide assists, encourage kids to play football and make them Orlando City fans.”

“I came for all of this. I want to take Orlando City to the top of football in the United States.”

Griezmann also welcomed the passionate support of Mexican football fans, saying he is excited to experience the atmosphere they bring to matches.

“For me, it’s an honour and a great thrill to play in front of Mexican fans. They love football and the show.”

Griezmann Ready for MLS Rivalries Including Inter Miami

With more global stars choosing MLS, Griezmann believes the league is becoming increasingly competitive.

“Today, players are coming while still in the prime of their careers. They’re really coming to compete, to win, and to take on new challenges.”

The forward also discussed the excitement of facing rivals such as Inter Miami, but insisted he wants to experience everything the league has to offer.

“I’ve watched so many matches and for me it will be special to get to know every stadium, every city, and every set of fans.”

“I want to experience all of MLS as a great adventure and I hope I can score in every stadium in the league.”
