Juventus step up Vicario interest as Martinez deal hits standstill

Juventus are increasing their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as their efforts to sign primary target Emiliano Martinez continue to stall.

The Italian giants have been searching for a new No.1 goalkeeper throughout the summer transfer window, with strengthening between the posts identified as one of their key priorities.

Their preferred option was Martinez, with Juventus hopeful that negotiations would become easier following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup. However, talks have failed to progress as expected, leaving the club frustrated in their attempts to reach an agreement.

As of Wednesday evening, discussions between Juventus and Aston Villa had not produced a breakthrough, forcing the Serie A side to accelerate their search for alternative options.

On July 6, Flashscore reported that Juventus had begun exploring a potential move for Vicario, who has now emerged as one of the leading candidates to become their next starting goalkeeper.

Sources in Turin have confirmed that Juventus are preparing a fresh approach for the Tottenham goalkeeper due to the lack of progress in negotiations for Martinez. Although the club has not completely abandoned hope of convincing Aston Villa to sell the Argentine international, optimism around the deal is fading.

As a result, Juventus could now turn their full attention towards Vicario.

The club have already made initial enquiries regarding the Italian goalkeeper’s situation at Tottenham Hotspur and believe he could be available during the current transfer window.

The next stage of negotiations will focus on the financial requirements of a potential deal, as well as whether Tottenham would be open to a loan agreement rather than a permanent transfer.

Meanwhile, Juventus are also among the clubs monitoring Chelsea winger Pedro Neto as they continue to assess attacking options before the transfer window closes.

The Portugal international could become another high-profile departure from Chelsea, following Alejandro Garnacho’s recent move to Aston Villa on an initial loan deal that includes an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

Garnacho’s exit has altered Chelsea’s attacking plans after the club completed the signing of Morgan Rogers in a reported £117 million transfer, although another forward is still expected to leave before deadline day.

Pedro Neto is one of the players Chelsea would consider selling if the right offer arrives.
