Chelsea close in on Jordan Henderson free transfer after Brentford confirm exit

Brentford have confirmed that Jordan Henderson has left the club by mutual consent, paving the way for the experienced midfielder to complete a proposed free transfer to Chelsea.

The 36-year-old’s departure comes amid growing reports linking him with a move to Xabi Alonso’s side, with The Athletic reporting earlier this week that Chelsea were exploring deals for both Henderson and Danny Welbeck.

Brentford Confirm Henderson Departure

After just one season at the Gtech Community Stadium, Henderson has officially become a free agent following an agreement to terminate his contract.

The former Liverpool captain joined Brentford from Ajax last summer and went on to make 34 appearances in all competitions. His performances also earned him a place in England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after his departure was confirmed, Henderson thanked everyone connected with the club.

“I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me, and for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one.

“Coming back to the Premier League was really important to me, and Brentford gave me that chance. I’ll always be thankful for that.

“I hope I was able to play my part in helping the team through an important period for the club. We achieved a lot together last season, and it’s something everyone involved should be proud of.

“Brentford is a special football club. It’s ambitious, progressive and full of good people. From the owners and leadership, to the coaching staff, the players and everyone behind the scenes, it’s been a privilege to be part of it.”

Chelsea Move Edges Closer

Henderson’s exit removes the final obstacle to a move to Chelsea, with the Blues now expected to press ahead with signing the experienced midfielder on a free transfer.

The England international is currently recovering from an arm injury sustained during the World Cup, but Chelsea are reportedly confident his experience and leadership qualities will make him a valuable addition to Alonso’s squad.

Should the move be completed, Henderson would bring a wealth of top-level experience to Stamford Bridge, having won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his distinguished career.
