Mohamed Salah scored twice as Trabzonspor secured their first Turkish Super Lig victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.

Salah, who joined Trabzonspor on a free transfer after ending his trophy-filled nine-year spell with Liverpool, delivered an impressive performance and also saw two goals ruled out for offside.

The Egyptian forward made his first league start after coming off the bench in Trabzonspor’s opening match of the campaign.

He opened the scoring in the eighth minute, taking advantage of a mistake from Basaksehir goalkeeper Muhammed Sengezer, who failed to hold onto the ball and allowed Salah to pounce.

Basaksehir forward Eldor Shomurodov levelled the score from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, but Salah quickly restored Trabzonspor’s advantage shortly after the restart.

Just three minutes into the second half, the 34-year-old winger surged down the right flank before combining with Ernest Muci. Salah then calmly finished into the far corner to put his side back in front.

Salah thought he had completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, but the effort was ruled out after a foul was spotted in the build-up. Another long-range finish was also disallowed for offside after the Basaksehir goalkeeper had ventured forward for a corner.

Salah will now shift his focus to Thursday’s Europa League playoff second leg against Ferencvaros.

Trabzonspor face a difficult task away from home after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in the first leg on their own ground.
