Edgar Degabriele has resigned as coach of Birżebbuġa St Peter’s following the club’s difficult start to the VBet Malta Premier season.

The newly-promoted side have suffered four consecutive defeats, with their latest setback coming in a 3-0 loss against Balzan last Saturday.

Birżebbuġa confirmed that Degabriele tendered his resignation as senior team coach and that the club had accepted his decision.

Despite the disappointing start to life in the top flight, Degabriele leaves after overseeing a highly successful period in the club’s history.

Under his guidance, Birżebbuġa secured promotion to the Premier League and also lifted the Challenge Cup, achievements which the club highlighted when announcing his departure.

In a statement, Birżebbuġa thanked Degabriele for his commitment and professionalism, stressing that the team’s recent results should not detract from his contribution.

The club said Degabriele had played an important role in taking Birżebbuġa back to the highest level of Maltese football and leaves with silverware to show for his spell in charge.

Birżebbuġa have already started the process of appointing a successor, with the club confirming that steps have been taken regarding the future leadership of the senior team.

An announcement on the new coach is expected shortly.
