Ħamrun Spartans held by Balzan in third successive draw

Ħamrun Spartans were held to their third consecutive draw in the Malta Premier League after Balzan fought back to earn a deserved 1-1 result.
Lucas Villela gave the Spartans the lead midway through the first half, but Mohammed Marzuq Yahaya equalised after the interval as Balzan produced an improved second-half performance.
The result represented another setback for Marco Amelia’s side, who were hoping to return to winning ways following their recent draw against Gżira United.
For Balzan, it was their fourth draw in five matches, keeping their hopes of securing a place in the Top Six alive.
Amelia made two changes to his starting line-up, introducing Rafael Compri and Villela in place of Ante Ćorić and Damir Ceter.
Balzan coach Andrew Cohen, meanwhile, made seven changes following the defeat against Żabbar St Patrick, with Manuel Djalo, Samir Arab, Jake Grech, Sean Cipriott, Nikola Ignjatovic, Yahaya and Ayom Majok all included from the start.
The Spartans made the brighter start, with Marcello Trotta threatening after just three minutes when he advanced into the penalty area from the right.
Villela then went close six minutes later, firing narrowly wide after receiving a pass from Jake Grech.
Balzan gradually settled into the encounter and threatened through Gabriel Santos, whose header from a Leo Fernandes cross forced a save from goalkeeper Marchegiani in the 26th minute.
However, Ħamrun broke the deadlock two minutes later when Ryan Camenzuli delivered an inviting ball from the left and Villela applied the finishing touch to beat Djalo.
Balzan responded positively, with Fernandes going close shortly afterwards before seeing another dangerous effort saved five minutes before the interval.
The visitors continued to press after the restart, with Eder’s powerful drive from the edge of the area deflected behind for a corner.
Trotta replied with a long-range effort that narrowly missed the target, while substitute Valentino Kuach Yuel also went close for Balzan in the 65th minute.
Balzan’s persistence was rewarded in the 72nd minute when Yuel combined with Fernandes down the right before setting up Yahaya, who finished past Marchegiani to restore parity.
The equaliser reflected Balzan’s improved display as they continued to frustrate the Spartans in the closing stages.
There was late drama deep into stoppage time when Balzan defender Nikola Ignjatovic received a second yellow card following a reckless challenge on substitute Ante Ćorić, leaving his side to finish with ten men.
However, Ħamrun were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage as the encounter ended level.
Ħamrun Spartans 1–1 Balzan
Scorers: Lucas Villela 28′ (Ħ); Mohammed Marzuq Yahaya 72′ (B).
Sent off: Nikola Ignjatovic (Balzan, second yellow card, stoppage time).
