Fabian Hurzeler has insisted that his full attention remains on Brighton’s impressive start to the season, while declining to comment on speculation linking him with the Manchester United job out of respect for Michael Carrick.

Carrick’s position at Manchester United has come under increasing pressure following a seven-match winless streak, which reached a new low on Wednesday with a heavy 4-1 defeat against Champions League debutants Como.

Brighton’s attacking form and strong performances in the Premier League have seen Hurzeler emerge as a potential candidate to replace Carrick if United decide to make another managerial change during the season.

The Red Devils could face the prospect of appointing their third manager in as many consecutive campaigns, with uncertainty continuing to surround the club’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Brighton have enjoyed an excellent start to the Premier League season and currently sit third in the standings, behind Manchester City and reigning champions Arsenal.

Hurzeler’s side will look to maintain their momentum when they travel to Liverpool on Sunday, with the Brighton manager determined to keep his players focused on their performances rather than the growing speculation surrounding his future.

“I’m fully focused on my job here. I don’t have time to think about these rumours because we play every three days,” said the 33-year-old German.

“Besides that, I have a lot of respect for Michael Carrick and what he achieved with Manchester United towards the end of last season.

“He is a great human being with a great personality. Whenever we meet, we have a really good relationship, so I have a lot of respect for him. There is nothing more to add.”

Meanwhile, Brighton’s impressive scoring run came to an end on Thursday as they were held to a goalless draw by Czech side Jablonec in the Europa League.

Despite Brighton’s impressive start to the season, which included a dramatic comeback from two goals down to defeat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup last month, Hurzeler insists there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“There are still areas where we can improve, and there is a lot of potential left to unlock in our players. That is why I am eager to continue working on those aspects alongside my squad and coaching staff,” he said.

“I have excellent specialists around me and a fantastic group of players who support me and give everything for this club. We have built this foundation over the past few years.

“We have experienced difficult periods as well as successful ones, but building these kinds of relationships takes time and strong connections. Those are things you should never take for granted.”
