Toto Wolff fires back at Helmut Marko over George Russell remarks

Toto Wolff defends George Russell after Helmut Marko questions his championship chances
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has defended George Russell, insisting the British driver still has what it takes to fight for a Formula One world championship despite criticism from former Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko.
Marko recently questioned whether Russell could recover from being outperformed by his younger Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, who has emerged as a leading contender in the title race.
Antonelli holds a 123-point advantage over Russell in the Formula One drivers’ standings, with 125 points remaining available. According to the scenario outlined, the Italian is also on course to become the sport’s youngest-ever world champion in Mexico City and the first Italian champion since 1953.
The 20-year-old has claimed nine victories in his second season, compared with three for the more experienced Russell, who began the campaign as the bookmakers’ favourite.
Helmut Marko Questions Russell’s Future at Mercedes
Speaking to Sky Germany ahead of the United States Grand Prix, Marko suggested Russell had lost his position as Mercedes’ leading driver.
“Russell is no longer the number one driver,” Marko said.
He added that Antonelli had clearly taken that role from his teammate, expressing doubts over whether Russell would receive another opportunity to compete for the world title or regain number-one status at another team.
Marko’s comments followed the United States Grand Prix, where Antonelli secured victory from pole position while Russell finished eighth after receiving a five-second penalty.
Toto Wolff Backs Russell to Fight Back
Wolff, while acknowledging his respect for his fellow Austrian, firmly disagreed with Marko’s assessment of Russell’s future.
Speaking to reporters at the Circuit of the Americas, the Mercedes boss insisted that Russell retains the talent and ability required to become a world champion.
“George has all the ability. I think the car doesn’t suit him,” Wolff said.
The Austrian also acknowledged that Russell could find the situation challenging, particularly after beginning the season with high expectations before facing an increasingly competitive teammate.
Wolff believes the right machinery could allow Russell to return to the front of the grid and challenge for the championship in a future campaign.
“I believe that in a new season, George — if we provide him with a quick car — has absolutely what he needs to win a championship,” he explained.
Wolff Highlights Russell’s Proven Talent
Wolff also pushed back against suggestions that Russell’s recent struggles should overshadow his achievements throughout his racing career.
The Mercedes team principal pointed to Russell’s success in Formula 2 and Formula 3, along with his accomplishments in junior European championships and karting, as evidence of his long-standing ability.
He argued that those achievements remain relevant despite Russell’s current challenges against Antonelli.
With the battle between the two Mercedes drivers attracting increasing attention, Russell’s future prospects will depend on both his performances and the competitiveness of the team’s car.
Wolff remains confident that Russell can return to title contention, rejecting the suggestion that his opportunity to become a Formula One world champion has passed.
