Tarxien Rainbows maintained their perfect start to the BOV Challenge League season after coming from behind to defeat Sirens 2-1 on matchday five, while Naxxar Lions needed a stoppage-time equaliser to rescue a point against Santa Lucia.

Fgura United also overturned an early deficit to defeat Gudja United, while Melita, St Andrews, Swieqi United, Pietà Hotspurs and Żurrieq registered important victories during another competitive round of fixtures.

Tarxien remain the only team with a maximum 15 points from their opening five matches, strengthening their position at the top of the standings.

Sirens 1-2 Tarxien Rainbows

Tarxien Rainbows continued their impressive start to the campaign with a hard-fought comeback victory over Sirens at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Sirens created the first meaningful opportunity through David Wismayer, whose effort was blocked by Isaac Cutajar.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock when Jean Borg unleashed a powerful angled drive that found the back of the net.

Tarxien responded positively after the interval and restored parity through promising youngster Ben Gaerty, who produced an excellent strike into the right corner.

The Rainbows continued to press forward, with Paul Lapira and Jeremy Micallef both squandering promising opportunities.

Sirens remained dangerous on the counterattack and almost regained the lead when Alan Wismayer’s deflected effort struck the crossbar.

However, Tarxien completed their comeback ten minutes from time when Colombian Jesus Jimenez Perez unleashed a spectacular long-range effort into the left corner, leaving goalkeeper Jake Scicluna helpless.

Sirens pushed forward in search of an equaliser and struck the crossbar again during the closing stages, but Tarxien held firm to secure their fifth consecutive victory.

Gudja United 1-2 Fgura United

Fgura United returned to winning ways after overcoming an early setback to defeat bottom-placed Gudja United 2-1 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Gudja made an excellent start and took the lead after just three minutes when Jamie Carbone beat the opposing defensive line before finishing past goalkeeper Christopher Farrugia from close range.

Fgura responded through Bruno Aguiar Muniz, whose header went narrowly wide, while Matteo Gambin tested Gudja goalkeeper Kierin Ellul Ruggier with an effort from outside the penalty area.

At the other end, Farrugia produced an important save to deny Ebrima Ndure on the counterattack.

Fgura increased their attacking pressure after the interval and were awarded a penalty when Samuel de Almeida was brought down inside the area.

Muniz stepped forward and confidently converted to restore parity.

The visitors completed their comeback in the 67th minute when Gianluca Bugeja rose highest to meet Karl Formosa’s corner and headed into the net.

Gudja almost salvaged a point ten minutes from time when a misplaced pass presented Ndure with a clear opportunity, but Farrugia produced another excellent save to preserve Fgura’s advantage.

Santa Lucia 1-1 Naxxar Lions

Naxxar Lions rescued a dramatic point deep into stoppage time against Santa Lucia, whose wait for a first league victory continued following a fifth consecutive draw.

Santa Lucia started brightly and threatened through Andrej Nakov and James Brincat before eventually taking the lead in the 43rd minute.

Nakov was on hand to convert a low cross from close range and give the hosts a deserved advantage.

Naxxar almost responded immediately, but Mark Fenech was denied by goalkeeper Reeves Cini.

The Lions emerged with greater attacking intent after the restart and gradually increased the pressure on the Santa Lucia defence.

Substitute Felippe Bugeja tested Cini from outside the area before the goalkeeper produced an excellent goal-line save to keep his side ahead.

Emmanuel Mbong then saw a powerful effort tipped onto the crossbar as Naxxar continued searching for an equaliser.

Their persistence was finally rewarded deep into stoppage time when Edson Farias converted a cross to make it 1-1.

The result ended Naxxar’s three-match winning streak, while Santa Lucia were left frustrated after surrendering their advantage in the closing moments.

Żebbuġ Rangers 1-2 Melita

Melita ended a three-match winless sequence with a narrow 2-1 victory over Żebbuġ Rangers.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the opening half and took the lead in the 32nd minute when Eric Mensah converted a penalty following a handball by Owen Portelli.

Żebbuġ improved after the restart and attempted to restore parity, but struggled to create clear opportunities.

Melita doubled their advantage 12 minutes from time when Karl Mohnani found the net from close range.

Żebbuġ pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time through Shalon Diacono, who produced an excellent long-range strike.

However, the late goal proved insufficient as Melita successfully protected their advantage to collect three valuable points.

Attard 0-1 St Andrews

St Andrews returned to winning ways after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Attard, courtesy of an early goal from Jean Paul Attard.

The Saints made an excellent start and broke the deadlock after just two minutes when Jean Paul Attard directed a low free-kick into the bottom corner, leaving the opposing goalkeeper with no chance.

St Andrews controlled the early exchanges, but Attard gradually settled into the encounter and began to offer greater resistance.

The hosts improved considerably after the interval and enjoyed the better of the second half.

The introduction of Silveira da Silva provided an additional attacking threat, but St Andrews goalkeeper Mifsud produced several important saves to preserve his team’s slender advantage.

Despite sustained pressure from Attard, the Saints held on to secure all three points.

Victoria Hotspurs 1-2 Swieqi United

Swieqi United secured an important 2-1 victory over Victoria Hotspurs in an eventful encounter that saw the Gozitan side finish with nine players.

Both teams created opportunities during an evenly contested opening period, with Zak Barbara and Vito Plut threatening for Swieqi, while Arthur Felipe Santana tested goalkeeper Badawi for Victoria.

Swieqi broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Barbara delivered an accurate cross that Benjamin Hili headed beyond Steven Sultana.

Victoria suffered a further setback shortly afterwards when substitute Thiago Nonato Peixoto received a straight red card.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Hotspurs continued to attack and were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute following a foul on Lydon Micallef.

Arthur Felipe Santana Stelmach converted from the spot to restore parity.

However, Swieqi regained the lead following a defensive misunderstanding, with substitute Kian Leonardi taking advantage to score from close range.

Victoria’s afternoon deteriorated further when Paul Fenech was dismissed during stoppage time, leaving the hosts with nine men as Swieqi secured the victory.

Pietà Hotspurs 2-0 Vittoriosa Stars D’Orsini

Pietà Hotspurs registered a 2-0 victory over Vittoriosa Stars D’Orsini in a closely contested encounter at the Centenary Stadium, where strong winds influenced proceedings.

Vittoriosa made the brighter start and created several opportunities during the opening half-hour.

Julius Babatola fired narrowly over, while Ender Alvarez headed wide from a free-kick before Sergio Mosquera tested Pietà goalkeeper Adam Newell.

Pietà gradually settled into the contest and took the lead in unusual circumstances in the 31st minute.

Emmanuel Bio delivered a corner that was caught by the strong wind and found its way directly into the net.

Vittoriosa continued searching for an equaliser after the interval, but Pietà remained dangerous through their attacking partnership of Bio and Precious Nwankwo.

The Hotspurs doubled their advantage in the 84th minute when Nwankwo found the net.

Vittoriosa continued to threaten during the closing stages, with Shaun Carabott seeing an effort cleared off the line, while Newell produced further saves to deny Babatola, Mosquera and Matthew Borg.
