Eala fights back to defeat Gibson and reach Tokyo quarter-finals

Eala battles back to defeat Gibson and reach Tokyo quarter-finals
Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala staged an impressive comeback to defeat Australia’s Talia Gibson 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 on Wednesday, securing her place in the quarter-finals of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
“It took a lot to turn that match around,” Eala admitted after recovering from a difficult start to seal a convincing victory.
The world No. 19 appeared at risk of suffering another early tournament exit after Gibson, ranked 38th in the world, claimed the opening set. However, Eala responded strongly, raising her level in the second set before completely dominating the decider.
The 21-year-old Filipino star described her turnaround as “a gradual increase of level,” explaining how small adjustments made a significant difference as the match progressed.
“Maybe just a couple of small details that, when accumulated, make a big difference,” she said.
“In one 30-all I went more for my shot or in one deuce I did so and so. Those little details, when all summed up, that’s the difference.”
Eala will now face Russian third seed Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals as she continues her campaign in the Japanese capital.
The rising star has become one of the biggest names in Philippine tennis, particularly after making history in August by becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a singles title on the WTA Tour. Her performances continue to attract widespread attention and enthusiastic support from fans at home and abroad.
That support was once again evident in Tokyo, where Eala received passionate backing throughout her encounter with Gibson.
Despite the crowd’s encouragement, Eala struggled to find her rhythm in the opening set, allowing the Australian to capitalise on missed opportunities and take the early advantage.
Eala began to turn the match around in the second set, although Gibson continued to create problems and was given several opportunities to stay in contention.
However, the Filipino steadily gained control, producing a commanding performance in the deciding set. She eventually sealed the victory when Gibson sent a shot into the net, completing a dominant 6-0 finish.
Eala’s performance was also reflected in the statistics, with the Filipina recording nine aces and breaking Gibson’s serve six times.
Reflecting on the atmosphere, Eala praised the fans for their continued support throughout the contest.
“Of course the support helps a lot all the time,” she said.
“It creates a great atmosphere, and I think there was a bit of back and forth within the crowd.
“You want to be present; you’re very invested in the match, so it comes naturally to focus.”
Meanwhile, Diana Shnaider secured her quarter-final spot with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory over Belarusian player Aliaksandra Sasnovich. She will now prepare for a challenging encounter against Eala.
Elsewhere at the Pan Pacific Open, world No. 1 Elena Rybakina is scheduled to begin her campaign on Thursday against fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva.
Japanese favourite Naomi Osaka will also be in action, taking on Slovakian wild card Mia Pohankova as the tournament continues to build towards its decisive stages.
