Djokovic fights through Basel Opener to strengthen ATP finals qualification hopes

Djokovic battles past Humbert in Basel to boost ATP finals qualification hopes
Novak Djokovic fought back from a set down to defeat France’s Ugo Humbert 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in his opening match at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Wednesday, keeping his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals alive.
The 39-year-old Serbian made a winning return to Basel for the first time since 2011, overcoming a determined challenge from the French left-hander in a closely contested three-set encounter.
“It was a super tight match, very intense from the beginning,” Djokovic said after the victory.
“I was under attack from the very first point. I had to weather the storm, but I managed to find my rhythm at the beginning of the second set.
“After that, I started feeling a bit more comfortable with his tempo. Overall, it was a huge challenge. I succeeded in managing to find the solutions in a tough match today.”
Djokovic Keeps ATP Finals Dream Alive
The victory represents an important step for Djokovic as he targets a record-extending 19th qualification for the ATP Finals, the prestigious season-ending tournament featuring the world’s leading players.
The Serbian strengthened his position in the race earlier this month by winning the China Open in Beijing, securing the 102nd title of his remarkable professional career.
However, his momentum was interrupted by an early exit at the Shanghai Masters, leaving him needing further strong results to secure his place in Turin.
Djokovic subsequently accepted a wildcard into the Basel tournament after dropping to 11th in the ATP Race to Turin standings, adding further importance to his opening-round performance.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion has enjoyed extraordinary success at the ATP Finals, winning the tournament seven times. However, he missed the previous two editions because of injury.
This year’s competition is scheduled to take place from November 15 to 22, with only the top eight players in the season-long standings earning qualification, subject to any withdrawals and replacement procedures.
World number one Jannik Sinner has already withdrawn from the event because of a knee problem, potentially affecting the qualification picture.
Djokovic Faces Struff in Basel Second Round
Djokovic will next face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round of the Swiss tournament.
The fourth seed will enter the encounter with a perfect 8-0 head-to-head record against Struff, giving him a strong historical record ahead of their latest meeting.
Nevertheless, Djokovic will need to maintain his level as he continues his push for another deep tournament run and valuable points in the race for the ATP Finals.
After navigating a difficult opening test against Humbert, the Serbian legend will be determined to build momentum in Basel and strengthen his position among the contenders for the season-ending championship.
