Medvedev books Vienna semi-final spot and secures ATP finals qualification

Daniil Medvedev has booked his place in the semi-finals of the Vienna ATP 500 after producing a convincing victory over France’s Adrian Mannarino, while also securing qualification for the season-ending ATP Finals.

The Russian, currently ranked world number five, needed just two sets to overcome the world number 73, claiming a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory on Friday.

Medvedev becomes the latest player to qualify for the prestigious season finale, joining Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton. The tournament will take place in Turin, Italy, from November 15 to 22.

The 29-year-old has been a regular presence at the ATP Finals, having missed qualification only once since 2019.

Against Mannarino, Medvedev maintained control throughout the contest before converting his second match point on the Frenchman’s serve to seal the victory.

His recent form has been particularly impressive. Since suffering a fourth-round defeat to Frances Tiafoe at the US Open in September, Medvedev has captured titles in Hangzhou and Almaty, while also reaching the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters 1000 and the Beijing ATP 500.

Standing in his way of reaching the Vienna final is Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz, who booked his semi-final place with a straight-sets victory over American Tommy Paul.

The Spaniard prevailed 6-4, 7-6(2) in the quarter-finals, extending his remarkable record to 14 consecutive victories at ATP 500-level tournaments this season.

Speaking after the match, Alcaraz was pleased with his performance, saying: “I think I played great tennis. I would say, overall, just happy for the battle and happy I found my way to get the win in straight sets.”

Meanwhile, newly crowned world number one Alexander Zverev also secured his place in the last four with an emphatic 6-0, 6-2 win over Britain’s Arthur Fery.

Fery appeared to struggle physically from the opening stages, having required medical attention towards the end of his second-round victory against Lorenzo Musetti on Thursday.

Zverev will now face Australia’s fifth seed Alex De Minaur for a place in the final. De Minaur advanced after defeating Italian Matteo Berrettini in straight sets.

The Australian will have extra motivation heading into the encounter, having previously defeated Zverev at the Laver Cup. With qualification for the ATP Finals still within his reach, De Minaur has plenty at stake as the Vienna tournament approaches its business end.
