Roko Prsa scored the decisive goal as Valletta defeated Floriana 1–0 in a rain-soaked derby to finish the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round at the top of the standings.

The Citizens ended their 11-match programme with 25 points, while Floriana finished fifth on 16. The defeat also marked a disappointing start for new Greens coach Carlos Alos Ferrer, who took charge just days before the encounter.

Both teams had already qualified for the Top Six, but the derby produced a competitive contest despite persistent rainfall and an increasingly difficult playing surface.

Valletta showed their attacking intentions early through Andrea Zammit and Bruno Gomes. Floriana, meanwhile, appealed for a penalty after four minutes and requested a Football Video Support review, but referee Slobodan Petrovic maintained his original decision.

Stephen Pius Odey tried his luck from distance for the Greens, while Diogo Tavares threatened at the other end as both sides searched for an opening.

Federico Varela was prominent in Floriana’s attacking play and forced a save from the Valletta goalkeeper. Zammit also went close for the Citizens, drawing an excellent stop from Guilherme Cioletti.

Floriana created another promising opportunity when Paul Mbong supplied Odey, whose effort went narrowly wide. Further attempts from Varela, including a free-kick, failed to break the deadlock before the interval.

Neither side made a half-time substitution, and the breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute. A Floriana clearance ricocheted off Prsa and into the unguarded net, giving Valletta the advantage.

The Greens pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Valletta defended compactly and restricted their rivals’ opportunities as conditions continued to hamper attacking play.

Floriana made another penalty appeal in the 88th minute following a challenge involving Odey. A second FVS review again resulted in no spot-kick, leaving the Citizens to see out the closing stages and claim the derby honours.

Afterwards, Valletta wing-back Thaylor Aldama praised his team’s attacking approach in the second half and their organisation after taking the lead.

Floriana defender Owen Spiteri acknowledged the difficulties posed by the weather and expressed frustration that the Greens had missed an opportunity to reduce the gap on the leaders.

Both clubs now turn their attention to the Top Six, with Valletta carrying the confidence of a derby victory into the next stage.
