Dodo Soares struck twice in eight minutes as Marsaxlokk swept aside Gżira United 5–0 at the Tedesco Stadium to finish second in the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round league phase.

The South Seasiders finished on 20 points, five behind leaders Valletta, while Gżira remained bottom with five points.

Gżira threatened first. Brooklyn Borg fired wide from outside the area before Christoffer Mafoumbi turned Djadjo Dinis’s long-range effort behind for a corner.

Marsaxlokk grew into the game and nearly went ahead in the 21st minute when Nikolai Muscat headed against the upright. Rasmus Linden struck the woodwork with another header four minutes later, but this time Soares fired home the rebound.

Soares doubled the lead in the 33rd minute with a volley that left Edoardo Colombo with no chance. Three minutes later, Leandro Aguirre curled an inswinging free-kick directly into the net to make it 3–0 before half-time.

Borg tested Mafoumbi again after the break, but Marsaxlokk added a fourth in the 69th minute when substitute Lucas Caruana drove the ball past Karl Sargeant. Ensell Attard rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.
