Ajax Secure Former Barcelona Skipper Marc-Andre ter Stegen on Loan Deal

Ajax have officially announced the signing of former Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen on a season-long loan, ending months of speculation over the experienced goalkeeper’s future.
The 34-year-old had been strongly linked with a move to the Dutch club since June after Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff identified the need for an experienced goalkeeper. Ter Stegen emerged as one of the club’s leading targets alongside former Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
The transfer was briefly delayed due to a financial disagreement between Barcelona and Ter Stegen, with tax-related issues preventing the deal from being completed. After several weeks of negotiations, both parties reached an agreement, allowing the German international to leave Barcelona’s pre-season camp in Birmingham and complete his move to Amsterdam.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen brings a wealth of experience to Ajax after an outstanding spell with Barcelona, where he spent more than a decade following his arrival from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014. During his time in Spain, the German goalkeeper made 423 appearances and collected 20 major trophies, including seven La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League crown in 2015.
The veteran joins an Ajax side looking to bounce back from a disappointing domestic campaign. The Amsterdam club finished fifth in the Eredivisie with 63 points, equalling their lowest-ever points tally in the competition. However, they secured a place in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers through the Dutch play-offs and progressed to the third qualifying round after an emphatic 8-2 aggregate victory over Serbian side Vojvodina Novi Sad.
Ajax’s next European challenge will see them take on Irish club Shelbourne as they continue their quest to reach the Conference League group stage.
Ter Stegen also becomes Ajax’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window, joining new arrivals Daley Blind, Caio Henrique, Marcos Leonardo, Tolu Arokodare, and fellow German Julian Brandt, who completed a free transfer last week.
Although he has moved to Amsterdam on loan, the 34-year-old remains under contract with Barcelona until 2028.
