Mirra Andreeva made a strong start to her US Open campaign on Tuesday, cruising past unseeded Indonesian Janice Tjen 6-2, 6-2 to book her place in the second round.

The fifth seed looked in complete control under the roof at Louis Armstrong Stadium, using her power and accuracy to overcome Tjen and keep her hopes of claiming a second Grand Slam title alive.

Andreeva announced herself on the biggest stage earlier this year by winning the French Open, but the 19-year-old has also demonstrated that she is capable of producing her best tennis on hard courts.

She appeared particularly comfortable in New York after reaching the mixed doubles semi-finals alongside fellow Russian Andrey Rublev last week. That confidence carried into her singles opener, where she quickly established control against Tjen.

“I’ve been talking to my psychologist about it a lot, trying to think about it as just another tournament I won this year and not put labels on it,“ Andreeva told reporters.

“Now I feel I’m just trying to move on in a way, like ‘OK, I won. That was great,’ but now it’s another tournament I want to win and that I have to try and show the best level that I have.“

The fifth seed made the first breakthrough with a powerful forehand winner to take a 3-2 lead in the opening set. From there, Andreeva took control, winning the next three games to wrap up the set in just 31 minutes.

Tjen struggled to find a response in the second set as Andreeva maintained the pressure. Another early break put the Russian firmly in command, and she never looked back as she completed a straightforward victory.

Andreeva will now face Germany’s Eva Lys in the second round.

The Russian had already faced Tjen recently at the Cincinnati Open, where she also came through a challenging encounter.

“Our match in Cincinnati was really tough… the conditions were tough as it was hot and humid,” Andreeva said.

“It was the first time I was playing her. She’s not easy to play against. Today, I was just trying to talk to my coach to see what we can do better in order for me to feel confident on the court. I was trying to be very aggressive.“

Andreeva added that she was pleased with the way she executed her game plan this time around.

“I was trying to go for my shots, and after everything, I just feel like today it was a better match.“

With her opening hurdle comfortably cleared, Andreeva now turns her attention to Lys as she continues her pursuit of another deep run at a Grand Slam.
