Community shield preview: Arsenal and Manchester City set for season opener

Arsenal and Manchester City will meet on Sunday afternoon in the 2026/27 Community Shield, with the traditional pre-season curtain-raiser offering both clubs an early opportunity to claim silverware ahead of the new campaign.

This year’s fixture will take place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff rather than Wembley, a venue that holds plenty of happy memories for Arsenal.

Arsenal Have Happy Memories in Cardiff

Arsenal played more matches at the Principality Stadium than any other club between 2001 and 2007, making 10 appearances at the venue while the new Wembley was under construction. They also won four Community Shields during that period.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have played at the stadium only once. Their previous appearance came in a UEFA Cup qualifier against TNS in August 2003, when City recorded a 2-0 victory.

Both sides will be determined to lift the trophy, despite the Community Shield often being regarded as one of the less significant pieces of silverware on offer.

Arsenal could have reason for confidence against a Manchester City side that has undergone significant changes following Pep Guardiola’s departure at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Gunners Hold the Historical Advantage

Arsenal have an impressive record in recent Community Shield appearances, having won their last five matches in the competition.

They have also prevailed in each of their previous appearances as reigning Premier League champions, doing so in 1998, 2002 and 2004.

The Gunners have beaten Manchester City in every previous Community Shield meeting between the sides. They won 4-0 in 1934, 3-0 in 2014 and triumphed on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 2023.

With 17 Community Shield victories, Arsenal have only Manchester United ahead of them on 21. City, meanwhile, have lost the fixture nine times, although they lifted the trophy in 2024 after defeating Manchester United.

Mikel Arteta also boasts a perfect record in his four Community Shield appearances. He won as a player in 2014 and 2015 before guiding Arsenal to victories as a manager in 2020 and 2023.

For Enzo Maresca, however, Sunday will be a completely new experience, as he has never previously played in or managed a Community Shield match.

Maresca Could Make History

Maresca could create a unique piece of history if he guides City to victory, having already become the first Manchester City manager to take charge of the club in the Community Shield as his first competitive match.

However, Arsenal have reasons to be cautious. The FA Cup winners rather than the Premier League champions have lifted the trophy in eight of the last 10 editions.

Recent meetings between the two clubs also favour City. Arsenal have suffered just one defeat, drawn twice and won three of their last six encounters with the reigning Community Shield opponents.

Manchester City’s defensive record could also prove important, with Maresca’s team keeping clean sheets in seven of their last nine competitive matches.

A penalty shoot-out could therefore be a realistic possibility, particularly given that five of the last seven Community Shield fixtures have required penalties to determine the winner.

Major Changes at Manchester City

City could be missing several important players for the match. Rodri is unlikely to feature, with the Spain international reportedly edging closer to a move to Barcelona.

Barcelona would certainly be concerned about the midfielder suffering an injury at such a crucial stage of negotiations.

City could also be without Bernardo Silva and John Stones, meaning their starting XI may look considerably different from the side that finished last season.

That does not mean Manchester City lack the quality to win. Their pre-season form has arguably been more convincing than Arsenal’s, while Maresca remains unbeaten as City manager.

Both Managers Have Plenty at Stake

Manchester City will face a strong Arsenal side that has already strengthened during the summer with the additions of Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, while further arrivals could follow before the transfer window closes.

Although the Community Shield may not carry the same importance as the Premier League or European competitions, both managers will expect their players to give their best.

Arteta and Maresca will also be conscious of the importance of starting the new season positively, particularly with supporters travelling to Cardiff to watch the fixture.

The performance could also influence their final preparations before the opening Premier League matches. Arsenal will face Coventry, while Manchester City begin their league campaign against Bournemouth.

With both sides aiming to begin the new season with a trophy, Sunday’s Community Shield promises to provide an intriguing first test for two teams with ambitions of competing for major honours.
