AaB suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats in the club’s history on Tuesday, falling to a 2-1 extra-time loss against lower-league side Vatanspor in the Danish Cup.

Vatanspor, based in the Brabrand suburb of Aarhus, produced one of the biggest cup upsets in recent memory by eliminating the former Danish giants after an intense encounter.

The match was played on a difficult pitch, with both sides battling through a closely contested first half. AaB eventually broke the deadlock midway through the second period when substitute Brian Nwadik put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

However, Vatanspor refused to give up and found an equaliser in the 85th minute. Captain Abduljabar Cumar Mohamed rose highest to meet a free-kick delivery, sending a fine header into the net and sparking huge celebrations among the home supporters.

The lower-league side then completed the remarkable comeback early in extra time. Mikkel Bach raced clear of AaB defender Bjarne Pudel before firing past goalkeeper Bertil Gronkjaer to put Vatanspor 2-1 ahead.

AaB came close to forcing another twist late on, but Andres Jasson struck the crossbar shortly before the final whistle, sealing a miserable night for the North Jutland outfit.

The defeat adds to AaB’s recent struggles, with Steffen Hojer’s side collecting just one point from their last three league matches. They currently sit sixth in the Danish 1st Division.
