George Russell set the pace in final practice for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday, finishing ahead of championship rival and former Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton at Monza.

Russell, who entered the weekend second in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and level on points with Hamilton, posted a fastest lap of 1:22.219 around the legendary Monza circuit.

The result continues an impressive weekend for the Mercedes driver, who was also quickest in Friday’s second practice session. Russell’s pace will give him plenty of confidence heading into qualifying as he looks to close the gap to championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

Hamilton, competing for home favourites Ferrari, was 0.226 seconds slower than Russell. The seven-time world champion is chasing a record sixth Italian Grand Prix victory at the historic “Temple of Speed”.

Monza is renowned as one of the fastest circuits on the F1 calendar, with its long straights and low-downforce layout making slipstreaming particularly important. Drivers often look to gain an aerodynamic tow from cars ahead to maximise their speed.

Antonelli finished fourth fastest in the other Mercedes, with reigning Italian Grand Prix winner Max Verstappen splitting the two Silver Arrows in third.

The championship picture could shift significantly this weekend, however, with Antonelli facing a major setback. The Italian is currently 59 points clear of Russell and Hamilton but is set to start the race from the back of the grid because of engine-related penalties.

That gives both Russell and Hamilton a valuable opportunity to reduce the deficit at the top of the standings.

Behind the leading quartet, Lando Norris was fifth fastest for McLaren, finishing 0.406 seconds off Russell’s benchmark. Norris, the reigning world champion, has won the last two races and will be hoping to continue his strong run of form in qualifying.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was sixth, ahead of Racing Bulls youngster Arvid Lindblad. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was eighth, with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto completing the top 10.

The session also featured a tense moment between Hamilton and Verstappen late in the running.

Hamilton made a move past the Red Bull at the Parabolica, but the Ferrari subsequently ran wide, with the incident attracting the attention of the stewards.

Verstappen was unhappy with the situation, telling his team over the radio: “He caused that.”

Hamilton offered his own version of events, responding: “I got blocked by Max.”

The competitive nature of the session was highlighted by the extremely tight times at the front, with the top 12 drivers all finishing within one second of Russell’s benchmark.

With qualifying now looming, Russell will be hoping his strong pace translates into pole position, while Hamilton and the rest of the field will be looking to close the gap when it matters most.
