Amine Gouiri stole the spotlight with a match-winning brace as Marseille began their 2026/27 Ligue 1 campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over 10-man Strasbourg at the Stade Velodrome, extending their unbeaten home record in this fixture to 19 league matches (W11, D8).

The opening game of the new Ligue 1 season featured two sides that had appointed new managers during the summer. Under new boss Bruno Genesio, Marseille made an energetic start, with Angel Gomes coming close twice during the opening 15 minutes.

The midfielder, who returned from a loan spell at Wolves, narrowly missed the target with his first attempt before later seeing another effort saved by Filip Jorgensen after the ball fell kindly to him inside the penalty area.

After watching his side struggle to find their rhythm early on, Strasbourg coach Hugo Oliveira finally saw his team threaten when Gessime Yassine found enough space to test Jeffrey de Lange with a low effort at the near post.

Jorgensen, however, produced the standout save of the opening half when he tipped Amine Harit’s curling effort over the crossbar, ensuring Strasbourg went into the interval with the score still level.

Jorgensen’s crucial save ultimately only postponed the inevitable, as Marseille carried their first-half momentum into the second period and broke the deadlock less than a minute after the restart.

Igor Paixao sparked the move down the left, using impressive footwork to beat his marker before finding Angel Gomes. The midfielder then laid the ball off for Amine Gouiri, who produced a composed sweeping finish beyond the helpless goalkeeper.

The opening goal of the Ligue 1 season was quickly followed by the campaign’s first red card. Samir El Mourabet was dismissed after kicking out at Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in a moment of frustration.

Strasbourg’s evening soon went from bad to worse when Paixao took advantage of Guela Doue’s lapse in concentration to win a penalty. Gouiri stepped up from the spot, sent Jorgensen the wrong way and calmly converted to complete his brace.

Marseille still had time to punish the depleted visitors with two more goals before the final whistle.

Substitute Keyliane Abdallah struck a low effort inside the near post to score his first senior goal, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg added further misery for Strasbourg with a composed volley that found its way past Jorgensen.

The late goals completed a convincing 4-0 victory for Marseille and made for a difficult Ligue 1 debut for Strasbourg boss Hugo Oliveira.
