Australian Darts Masters Klinge stuns Ross Smith as wade shines in Wollongong

Home hero [Brody Klinge] pulled off the biggest win of his career as he defeated England’s [Ross Smith] in a deciding leg to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Darts Masters, while [James Wade] produced a stunning performance on the opening day in Wollongong.

Klinge was the only Oceanic player to progress from Friday’s action, producing an 11-dart break in the deciding leg to edge past Smith.

Smith hit eight 180s and averaged 102.88, but two missed match darts in the final leg allowed Klinge to seize his opportunity. The Australian averaged 96 and held his nerve to secure a memorable victory.

“I’m over the moon with that. That was the adrenaline rush of my life,” said Klinge.

“I felt a lot more comfortable playing this time around, and it showed in my performance, I think.

“Ross was throwing everything at me. I was lucky he missed at the end there, but I took my chance.

“I’m on a free rein now. I’m just going to do my best and keep going. There’s no pressure on me.”

Klinge will face [Gian van Veen] in the quarter-finals after the world number two defeated [Raymond Smith] 6-3.

Van Veen finished the match in style, producing an excellent 161 checkout to complete a composed performance.

Wade Produces Stunning Average

[James Wade] threatened to steal the show on the opening day after recording the highest average of the tournament so far.

The Englishman posted an incredible 112.73 average in a 6-0 demolition of [Tim Pusey], making it the second-highest average recorded at a World Series of Darts event in Australia.

Wade also produced a sensational 164 checkout on the bull as he cruised into the quarter-finals.

“That felt amazing. Everything just fell into my hands there,” Wade said.

“I think I’m guilty of sometimes forgetting how lucky I am to do what I do, but I’m just happy to be here, and I’m playing alright.

“I’m not here to make the numbers up, but I’m amongst some great players. If I replicate that level tomorrow, everyone is stuffed, but tomorrow is a different day!”

Wade will meet [Stephen Bunting] in the last eight after the Liverpudlian defeated [Mal Cuming] 6-3.

Bunting raced into a 3-0 lead before Cuming threatened a comeback, but ‘The Bullet’ held firm to secure his place in the quarter-finals.

Price and Rock Progress

[Gerwyn Price] also booked his place in the last eight with a 6-2 victory over Australian fan favourite [Simon Whitlock].

The Welshman won four consecutive legs and sealed the match with back-to-back checkouts of 124 and 108.

Price will face [Josh Rock], who also recovered from a difficult position to defeat [Adam Leek] 6-3.

Rock trailed 3-2 before winning four straight legs, including two ton-plus checkouts, to complete the comeback.

Clayton Begins Title Bid

[Jonny Clayton] began his bid for back-to-back World Series titles with a 6-3 victory over [Ben Robb].

Clayton will face Australian number one [Damon Heta] in the quarter-finals after Heta averaged 102.39 during a 6-2 win over compatriot [Joe Comito].

The Australian Darts Masters concludes on Saturday, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final all taking place at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
