Ħamrun Spartans kept their UEFA Conference League hopes firmly alive after battling to a deserved 1-1 draw away to NSÍ Runavík in the first leg of their first qualifying round tie on Thursday.

Given the difficult circumstances surrounding their preparations, the result represented an excellent outcome for the Maltese champions, who only arrived in the Faroe Islands around midday on the day of the match before taking to the field just a few hours later.

Despite the disrupted build-up, Stefano Sanderra’s side produced a disciplined and resilient performance, recovering from a first-half deficit to claim an important away draw that leaves qualification finely balanced ahead of next Wednesday’s return leg at the Centenary Stadium.

Sanderra opted for a 3-5-2 formation, with Damir Ceter and Lucas Villela leading the attack, while captain Matthew Guillaumier marshalled the midfield.

The opening stages were closely contested, with both teams cancelling each other out and clear-cut opportunities at a premium.

Ħamrun threatened first after 12 minutes when a loose clearance fell kindly to Jake Grech, but the defender fired over the crossbar from a promising position.

Runavík gradually began to apply more pressure and took the lead in the 26th minute. A corner from Jann Benjaminsen found Petur Knudsen unmarked inside the area, and the forward made no mistake, heading past goalkeeper Celio.

The Spartans responded positively and almost found an immediate equaliser on the half-hour mark. Guillaumier released Damir Ceter through on goal, but the Colombian striker was denied by an excellent save from goalkeeper Tom Amos.

At the other end, Ħamrun were grateful to Jack Ipalibo, who produced a crucial block to prevent Emil Joensen from doubling the Faroese side’s advantage shortly before halftime.

The visitors returned after the break with greater intent and were rewarded just after the hour mark.

A well-worked move saw Guillaumier pick out Villela inside the penalty area, and the Brazilian forward intelligently squared the ball across goal for Tobias Bjornstad, who arrived at the far post to slot home the equaliser.

The goal lifted the Spartans, who began to enjoy their best spell of the match. Grech tested Amos with a long-range effort on 64 minutes as Ħamrun searched for a second goal.

Sanderra’s side suffered a setback with 13 minutes remaining when defender Emerson Marcelina was forced off through injury, prompting the introduction of Kean Scicluna.

Ħamrun almost snatched victory in dramatic fashion deep into the match. Substitute Ante Ćorić delivered a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, but Guillaumier was unable to apply the finishing touch with the goal at his mercy.

Although denied a late winner, the Spartans returned to Malta with a valuable draw that leaves the tie evenly poised. Encouraged by a determined performance away from home, Ħamrun will now fancy their chances of finishing the job in front of their own supporters next Wednesday and booking their place in the second qualifying round.
