Harry Kane has set his sights on winning the Champions League with Bayern Munich and ending England’s long wait for a major international trophy after describing his Ballon d’Or triumph on Monday as the greatest achievement of his career so far.

The England captain made history in his hometown of London, becoming the first English player in 25 years to claim the prestigious award. Kane finished ahead of Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal to be crowned the world’s best footballer.

The 33-year-old earned the honour after an outstanding campaign, scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country last season. His impressive performances also helped Bayern Munich secure a domestic league and cup double.

“I’d say a dream come true, but it’s beyond my wildest dreams, so just incredible,” Kane said.

He also highlighted the significance of his achievement for English football, expressing pride in bringing the prestigious trophy back to his country.

“I think it’s massive for England, for our country. Being here in London was a good omen for me, and it’s been too long. To put us back on the map and put us here with this trophy, I’m extremely proud,” the England skipper added.

Kane remains England and Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer, but his collection of major team honours has so far been limited to domestic titles in Germany since joining Bayern Munich in 2023.

Bayern’s Champions League campaign ended in the semi-finals last season, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The England captain has also experienced international disappointment, losing the European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024 before suffering another setback at the World Cup, where England were beaten by Argentina in the semi-finals.

Despite these setbacks, Kane remains confident that he still has time to achieve more success, believing that he can compete for and win football’s biggest trophies at the age of 33.

“I still have a lot to achieve in this game. Winning the Champions League at club level and lifting a major trophy with England are definitely my top priorities,” Kane added. “There are so many things I want to accomplish.”

Unlike Lamine Yamal of Spain and France captain Kylian Mbappe, both of whom won the World Cup at a young age, Kane’s path to the top was far from straightforward.

Before establishing himself in Tottenham’s first team, Kane was sent out on loan four times to lower-league clubs. However, he believes those early challenges continue to motivate him to achieve more success at the highest level for as long as possible.

“I had to go through many ups and downs, especially early in my career, when you’re learning about yourself, both as a professional and in life,” he said.

“I found ways to improve and gain an advantage over players who may have had more natural ability than me.

“Those experiences helped shape me as a professional because I never take anything for granted. I know there is always someone like me, someone younger, working hard to take my place, whether in the England national team or at Bayern Munich,” he added.
