Liverpool entered Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Villarreal boasting an impressive recent record against the Spanish side, having won their previous three meetings dating back to 2016.

Across those encounters, the Reds had scored eight goals while conceding just twice, making Villarreal’s early breakthrough at Anfield particularly unexpected.

Despite Liverpool’s historical advantage, the visitors stunned the home crowd by taking the lead just four minutes into the match, immediately putting the hosts on the back foot and setting the stage for a dramatic contest.

Van Dijk’s Costly Mistake

Georges Mikautadze fired past Alisson to give Villarreal an early lead and silence the Anfield crowd. However, the goal came after a costly mistake from Virgil van Dijk, whose attempted clearance with a header went straight into the path of the Georgian forward.

Liverpool looked to respond quickly, with Rio Ngumoha producing the hosts’ first notable attacking effort a few minutes later. His attempt was blocked, adding to the frustration for the home side as they struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages.

The young winger was Liverpool’s most lively attacking presence, making an impressive impact despite the team’s difficult start. Before being substituted later in the match, Rio Ngumoha recorded 12 touches inside Villarreal’s penalty area, more than twice the total managed by any other player from either side.

Despite Ngumoha’s creativity and determination, Villarreal continued to control the early stages and put Liverpool under considerable pressure.

Villarreal Maintain Their Early Dominance

Nathan Saliba threatened on two occasions, while Tajon Buchanan and Sergi Cardona also tested Liverpool’s defence. The Reds struggled to maintain their defensive shape as the visitors repeatedly found space and created promising opportunities.

Kostas Tsimikas, however, proved a reliable presence at the back. The Liverpool defender won all of his tackles and worked tirelessly to disrupt Villarreal’s attacking moves, helping the hosts withstand the pressure during a challenging opening period.

Over the course of the match, Tsimikas delivered an impressive all-round performance. He made three interceptions, completed two of his three attempted dribbles and contested 13 individual duels, winning nine of them. He also recovered possession 10 times, more than any other player on the pitch.

However, even his outstanding contribution could not prevent Villarreal from extending their advantage.

Cardona Finds Space to Double Villarreal’s Lead

With Liverpool’s entire back four caught high up the pitch, Villarreal exploited the space behind them and moved through midfield with ease. Nathan Saliba then picked out Sergi Cardona, who surged towards the Kop with acres of space ahead of him and no Liverpool defender close enough to challenge his advance.

Cardona calmly finished past Alisson to double Villarreal’s lead, leaving Liverpool’s defenders facing the goalkeeper’s frustration. The visitors had made the breakthrough look remarkably straightforward, and the match had not yet reached the half-hour mark.

Liverpool responded quickly, however, and found a way back into the contest just minutes later. Kostas Tsimikas delivered a dangerous corner that Alexis Mac Allister met superbly, reducing the deficit and giving the home side renewed hope of turning the game around.

The combative Argentine midfielder continued to make his presence felt, winning the vast majority of his ground and aerial duels despite being one of the smallest players on the pitch.

Araujo Brings Liverpool Back on Level Terms

Although Liverpool had struggled to build sustained momentum after reducing the deficit, Ronald Araujo delivered a crucial breakthrough in stoppage time. The Uruguayan defender rose to meet a cross at the far post and powered a header home, drawing Liverpool level before the half-time whistle.

Remarkably, it was Araujo’s only touch inside Villarreal’s penalty area throughout the match, but it proved decisive in ensuring the teams went into the break on equal terms.

The defender has quickly established himself as a fan favourite at Anfield, and his relentless commitment, determination and willingness to give everything for the team have made it easy to understand why supporters have taken to him so quickly.

Interestingly, Araujo was the only member of Liverpool’s back four who did not attempt a tackle or record an interception during the match. However, he was also the only defender to win every duel he contested, underlining his effectiveness in individual battles.

His substitution at half-time, with Florian Wirtz coming on in his place, appeared to be a surprising decision by Andoni Iraola. Nevertheless, the German quickly settled into the contest and came close to scoring twice within the first 10 minutes of his introduction.

Gakpo and Gravenberch Take Control

Liverpool dominated the following spell, controlling possession and enjoying a commanding 78% share of the ball as they pushed forward in search of another goal.

Cody Gakpo began finding opportunities to threaten Villarreal’s goal, although his biggest contribution came in the physical battles across the pitch. The Dutch forward attempted 15 individual duels, winning nine of them, with no other player matching his total for duels contested.

Alongside the equally combative Ryan Gravenberch, Gakpo helped establish the platform Liverpool needed to take control of the contest and build sustained attacking pressure.

The shift in momentum was clear after Santiago Mourino’s attempt for Villarreal in the 40th minute. From that point, Liverpool registered 11 consecutive shots before Alexis Mac Allister scored his second goal of the match in the 65th minute.

Wirtz Adds Liverpool’s Fourth

By this stage, Liverpool had firmly taken control, with the momentum swinging decisively in their favour. Their dominance soon produced another goal, as Cody Gakpo provided the assist for Florian Wirtz to make it 4-2 just three minutes after Mac Allister’s second strike.

Although Tani Oluwaseyi scored a late third goal for Villarreal to make the final scoreline more respectable, Liverpool were deserving winners based on their overall performance and dominance throughout the contest.

Trey Nyoni also delivered a noteworthy performance, even if his contribution attracted less attention than some of his teammates’ displays.

During his 81 minutes on the pitch, Nyoni recorded a joint-best pass completion rate of 94.3%, recovered possession seven times and won half of his individual duels. He also completed two of the three tackles he attempted, highlighting his effectiveness and composure in midfield.

While Liverpool’s attacking players earned much of the attention, Nyoni’s contribution provided another positive aspect of an impressive team performance as the Reds secured a memorable Champions League victory.

For the 19-year-old, the match marked his longest appearance in a Liverpool shirt this season, and he made the most of the opportunity.

Coincidentally, Liverpool’s comeback also ended a long wait for a particular Champions League achievement. It was the first time the Reds had won a match in the competition after falling two goals behind since 3 May 2022, when they came from behind to defeat Villarreal 3-2.
