Jessica Pegula Overcomes Madison Keys to Reach Berlin Semi-Finals
American world number four Jessica Pegula booked her place in the semi-finals of the WTA Berlin event on Friday after a straight-sets win over fellow American Madison Keys.
The 2024 Berlin grass-court champion edged a tightly contested encounter, prevailing 7-6(5), 7-6(8) in hot conditions in the German capital.
It was the pair’s first meeting since Pegula ended Keys’ Australian Open title defence in January. Both players exchanged breaks of serve in the opening set before Pegula took control in the tiebreak.
In the second set, Pegula moved ahead 4-2, but Keys battled back to force another tiebreak. However, Pegula held her nerve again, sealing a 10-8 victory to extend her winning streak against fellow Americans this year to seven matches.
Earlier on Friday, world number eight Elina Svitolina is set to meet Alexandra Eala, who produced an upset victory over Elena Rybakina on Thursday.
In the final quarter-final of the day, eighth seed Linda Noskova goes up against Spanish wildcard Paula Badosa.
