Kerċem Ajax claimed the BOV GFA Super Cup after producing an impressive performance to defeat Xewkija Tigers 4-1 in the final at the Gozo Stadium on Saturday.

Gabriel Vella opened the scoring for Kerċem in the first half before Patrick Tiengo Vasconcellos doubled their advantage after the interval. Xewkija briefly threatened a late comeback through David Rajchenberg Gonzalez, but an Isaias Moura Vera Cruz De Souza brace ensured the trophy went to Kerċem.

Kerċem broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when Vella found the net to give his side a 1-0 advantage which they carried into the interval.

Xewkija looked to respond after the restart, but it was Kerċem who struck again in the 65th minute through Vasconcellos to put themselves firmly in control at 2-0.

The match then produced a dramatic finale as Xewkija were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute. Gonzalez converted from the spot to reduce the deficit and give the Tigers renewed hope.

However, any prospect of a comeback was quickly extinguished when Kerċem were awarded a penalty of their own just two minutes later.

De Souza made no mistake from the spot to restore Kerċem’s two-goal cushion before adding his second goal in the 90th minute to complete an emphatic 4-1 victory.

The result saw Kerċem Ajax secure the first piece of Gozitan silverware of the season in convincing fashion.
