Linda Noskova plans to put her heartbreaking US Open quarter-final defeat behind her by enjoying a few more days in New York before returning home.

The 21-year-old Czech came within touching distance of a major upset against world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday, but eventually lost 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (7) in a gruelling three-hour battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Noskova led by a break in the deciding set and also held an advantage in the final tiebreak, only for two-time defending champion Sabalenka to fight back and snatch victory.

Rather than dwell on the disappointment, Noskova plans to make the most of her remaining time in the Big Apple.

“I’m going to stay for, like, three more days. I’m going to get drunk and forget about this, I guess,” Noskova told reporters with a laugh.

“I’m old enough to do that, thankfully.

“I love New York. I have so many places I want to go. I have a lot of great friends here. They will show me around and, you know, I will forget about it hopefully in the next couple of hours.”

There was certainly plenty for Noskova to be frustrated about after she repeatedly pushed top seed Sabalenka to the limit before ultimately falling short.

The Czech admitted she could have made different decisions at important moments during the match, but also acknowledged that Sabalenka produced her best tennis when it mattered most.

Despite the painful defeat, Noskova believes the performance can provide a significant boost to her confidence and motivation following her breakthrough at Wimbledon.

“I feel like I have that back,” she said when asked about rediscovering her hunger after previously struggling for motivation following recent success.

“Such a loss is good for the motivation… I have to take some positives from it all.”

Noskova’s run in New York also underlined her status as one of the rising stars of the WTA Tour.

She reached a career-high world number six last month and believes her latest performances have shown she belongs among the sport’s elite.

“After these matches when you’re so close… it kind of reminds you of where you are standing,” she said.

“I will just try to keep going, you know. I feel great on court, which is always my main point, and ranking doesn’t really matter.”
