Rory McIlroy believes this year’s Irish Open will have a “different” feel if US President Donald Trump makes his expected visit to the tournament this weekend.

Trump, a well-known golf enthusiast, is expected to attend the event at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Doonbeg in County Clare as part of a two-day visit to Ireland.

McIlroy has previously played golf with Trump, who earlier this year praised the Northern Irishman’s achievements after he claimed back-to-back US Masters titles.

“It’s going to be different, but the one thing I’d say is his golf resorts have hosted PGA Tour events, European Tour events, LIV events,” McIlroy told the BBC.

“He’s a big fan of golf, he’s a wonderful supporter of golf. He’s got a beautiful property here in Doonbeg — it’s the first time I’ve played it.

“It’s going to be different with him being here, but we’re here to play a golf tournament and it’s a good golf course, so keep our head down and play.”

Trump is scheduled to meet Irish President Catherine Connolly and hold talks with Republic of Ireland Prime Minister Micheál Martin during his visit.

He could also have a role in Sunday’s tournament, with the US president potentially presenting the Irish Open winner with the trophy.

However, Trump’s presence could bring additional security measures, which may affect the number of spectators allowed at the event.

“I think the weekend, especially when he’s here, crowds will be limited,” added the 37-year-old McIlroy, who is one of only six men to have completed the career Grand Slam, winning all four of golf’s major championships.
