Liverpool have shown early backing for Andoni Iraola by moving to sign Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona, giving their new head coach another defensive option ahead of the new Premier League season.

The move comes after Liverpool identified the need to strengthen their defence, with Iraola keen to avoid entering the opening weeks of the campaign short of options at the back.

Araujo’s arrival may come as a surprise given that the 27-year-old was not previously considered an obvious Liverpool target. However, defensive reinforcement had increasingly emerged as an area the club were examining behind the scenes.

As Flashscore sources reported earlier this week, Liverpool had been exploring the possibility of signing a centre-back who could also provide cover at right-back – a profile that fits the Barcelona defender perfectly.

Liverpool had initially indicated that they would not rush into an unexpected late move. The club were prepared to remain patient and wait for several players to return to full fitness rather than enter the transfer market simply to add squad depth.

That stance, however, began to change as concerns grew over the defensive options available to Iraola at the start of his reign.

The club had been waiting for Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni to fully return to the squad. But a 4-2 pre-season defeat to Leeds United last weekend prompted renewed discussions over whether Liverpool could afford to continue waiting.

While the result was not viewed as a major concern in isolation, it did raise questions over how Liverpool would cope if they began the Premier League campaign with limited defensive options.

Flashscore understands that Iraola made it clear he did not want Liverpool to start the season in a vulnerable position, particularly with the opportunity to make a strong early impression.

Liverpool’s opening fixtures against Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town and Fulham represent an opportunity to build momentum from the outset, and the club’s hierarchy are determined to give their new manager the best possible platform.

Araujo’s arrival provides exactly that.

The Barcelona defender offers valuable versatility, with the ability to operate both at centre-back and right-back. His presence should also ease the pressure on Liverpool’s squad while other defensive players work their way back to full fitness.

The move therefore represents more than simply another defensive addition.

By bringing in Araujo, Liverpool’s hierarchy have demonstrated their willingness to back Iraola and provide him with the tools he believes are necessary to compete from the first day of the new campaign.

For the new Liverpool boss, Araujo’s arrival is an early vote of confidence – and a clear indication that the club want the Iraola era to begin on the front foot.
