The Malta Football Association (MFA) continued its ongoing club visitation programme with constructive meetings at Birżebbuġa St Peter’s and Balzan FC. Led by Vice President Dr Matthew Paris and National Team Head Coach Emilio de Leo, the delegation aimed to reinforce dialogue and collaboration between the national team setup and domestic clubs.

Dr Paris was accompanied by fellow MFA Vice President Trustin Farrugia Cann, national team coaching staff, and association officials. The delegation was welcomed at Birżebbuġa SP by President Joseph Fenech and Head Coach Edgar Degiabriele. They subsequently visited Balzan FC, meeting with long-standing administrator Peter Cipriott and Head Coach Andrew Cohen.

Both visited clubs have successfully made their return to the top flight this season, showcasing highly competitive squads in their opening fixtures.

Working Together for Player Development

The primary focus of the discussions centered on building a stronger, two-way relationship between the national teams and local clubs. Key areas of focus included:

• Two-way information flow: Blending MFA sports science insights with the invaluable daily player observations of club coaches.
• Open-door policy: National Team Head Coach Emilio de Leo extended an open invitation for club coaches to attend national team training sessions to exchange tactical ideas.
• Streamlined pathways: Creating a unified tactical and physical transition for players moving between domestic and international football.

Enhancing Player Welfare and Post-Match Recovery

A major practical proposal discussed was the management of player workloads during tight international fixtures.

• National team recovery sessions: Building on ideas from a previous visit to Gżira United, the MFA proposed that international players complete their post-window recovery sessions with the national team staff before returning to their clubs.
• Club endorsement: Both Birżebbuġa SP and Balzan FC coaching staffs welcomed the initiative, agreeing that professional recovery minimizes injury risks before domestic competition resumes.

Shared Infrastructure and Facility Solutions

The delegation addressed the structural challenges facing domestic teams regarding training grounds. While Birżebbuġa SP boasts established facilities, Balzan FC highlights the struggle many clubs face regarding pitch sharing and accessing full-size training grounds.

To mitigate this, the MFA discussed opening up the association’s own premium facilities to clubs facing severe training ground deficits, maximizing the use of shared football infrastructure.

Securing the Future: Grassroots and Youth Funding

Dr Matthew Paris heavily emphasized that long-term national team success relies entirely on strengthening club nurseries and homegrown talent.

• Tripartite collaboration: The MFA is proposing a joint initiative alongside the Malta Premier League and the Maltese Government.
• Dedicated youth fund: The objective is to establish a dedicated financial fund specifically engineered to support grassroots nurseries.
• Collective growth: Dr Paris reiterated that because players spend their daily development cycles within clubs, closer structural collaboration is a necessity.

A Promising Start for Newly Promoted Sides

National Team Coach Emilio De Leo commended both squads on their early-season performances. After analyzing their opening matches, De Leo praised the quality and tactical validity of the rosters assembled by the newly promoted sides. He also lauded the highly positive and professional environments fostered by both committees.

Building One Football Community

These latest visits mark the continuation of a league-wide engagement strategy. Having already met with Sliema Wanderers, Żabbar St. Patrick, Mosta, Gżira United, and Birkirkara FC, the MFA delegation has five remaining top-flight teams left to visit in the coming weeks. The ultimate goal remains unified: creating the best possible ecosystem for Maltese footballers to thrive domestically and internationally.
