The Malta Beach Soccer National Team produced one of the most dramatic comebacks in its recent history, recovering from a three-goal deficit to defeat Slovakia 4-3 after extra-time in the placement play-offs of the 2026 Euro Beach Soccer League Division B in Batumi, Georgia.

Trailing 3-0 midway through the match, Malta showed tremendous character and resilience to fight back and eventually secure victory in spectacular fashion, ending their Division B campaign on a high note.

Slovakia made the perfect start, taking the lead after just one minute and 25 seconds. From a corner, Lipovsky delivered the ball for captain Smalik, whose first-time effort bounced awkwardly off the sand and wrong-footed the Maltese goalkeeper before finding the net.

The Slovakians doubled their advantage in the second period when Husty produced an acrobatic bicycle kick in the 12th minute and 23 seconds. Just 90 seconds later, Lipovsky struck again to give Slovakia what appeared to be a commanding 3-0 lead.

Malta, however, refused to surrender.

Jeremy Cassar sparked the comeback by converting a superb 15-metre free-kick, giving Malta renewed hope before the end of the second period.

Moments later, Malta were awarded a penalty after Demanuele was fouled inside the area. Captain Claudio Venuto stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

With momentum firmly on their side, Malta threw everything forward in the third period in search of an equaliser.

Their persistence was rewarded with just 48 seconds remaining when Brandon Lee Bray converted a 10-metre free-kick to level the score at 3-3 and force the match into extra-time.

The decisive moment arrived in extraordinary circumstances.

With only 50 seconds left before penalties, goalkeeper Brandon Muscat launched a powerful shot from inside his own penalty area. The effort flew the length of the pitch and beat the Slovakian goalkeeper, nestling into the back of the net to seal a sensational 4-3 victory for Malta.

The dramatic triumph ensured Malta concluded their 2026 Euro Beach Soccer League Division B campaign with a memorable win, having faced a series of demanding tests against strong European opposition throughout the tournament.
