Man City join Tottenham in race for Cody Gakpo

Manchester City make initial enquiry for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo
Manchester City have made an initial enquiry about the conditions required to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool, sources have confirmed, as Pep Guardiola’s side explore options to strengthen their attack before the transfer deadline.
City are looking for another attacking option, with Erling Haaland needing a consistent supply of chances as well as dependable support in the forward line.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on deals for City’s Savinho and Omar Marmoush, creating the need for attacking reinforcements. Spurs have already shown interest in Cody Gakpo, but sources have confirmed that City are now considering a late move to bring the Liverpool forward to the Etihad Stadium.
Gakpo’s versatility across the front three is one of his biggest attractions. The Netherlands international can operate on the left wing or through the middle, a quality that has also made him a target for Tottenham.
Sources say City are expected to decide within the next 24 hours whether to step up their pursuit of Gakpo.
The 27-year-old is only likely to be allowed to leave Liverpool if the Reds manage to bring in new attacking players. Liverpool are currently pursuing Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh as they consider potential replacements.
Gakpo impressed for Liverpool in their weekend meeting with Newcastle United, while manager Andoni Iraola is keen for him to remain at the club.
The forward, however, wants to feel like a key part of Liverpool’s plans, and the possibility of joining Manchester City could prove attractive.
City have also agreed a deal to sign Palmeiras winger Allan Elias, 22, for an initial £32 million, but Enzo Maresca remains keen to add another attacking option before the transfer window closes.
City already have a strong attacking group featuring Jeremy Doku, Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, but the club are looking for a player who can offer experience, versatility and consistent goal contributions.
Gakpo featured both as a left winger and centre-forward for Liverpool last season, registering nine goals and six assists. He also opened his account for the new campaign by scoring against Newcastle at the weekend.
Tottenham remain interested in Gakpo and could now face a major challenge from Manchester City in the race for his signature.
However, sources indicate that Liverpool’s current position is that Gakpo is not for sale, unless an exceptional offer arrives before the transfer deadline.
