Tauson stages stunning someback to overcome tough Mexican challenge in Monterrey

Clara Tauson completes stunning comeback to reach Monterrey second round
Clara Tauson produced a superb comeback to reach the second round of the WTA 500 tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, overcoming home favourite Renata Zarazua 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the early hours of Tuesday CET.
The world No. 42 made a promising start against Zarazua, ranked 71st, racing into a 2-0 lead before the Mexican found her rhythm and levelled the opening set.
After Tauson held serve to move 3-2 ahead, Zarazua took control and won the next four games to claim the first set 6-3.
The Dane responded strongly in the second set, however, maintaining her composure on serve while breaking her opponent twice to level the match at 6-3.
The deciding set was a completely different story, with Tauson dominating from the opening game. The 22-year-old produced a commanding 6-0 finish, wrapping up the victory in just 28 minutes after converting a match-clinching break point.
The victory marked only the second meeting between Tauson and Zarazua. The Mexican had won their previous encounter in November 2024.
Tauson now faces a major test in the second round against Ekaterina Alexandrova, the tournament’s top seed.
The 31-year-old Russian, currently ranked No. 19 in the world, will be looking to halt Tauson’s run in Monterrey.
However, Tauson can take confidence from their previous meetings, having won both of their head-to-head encounters, with both matches coming in 2021.
The Monterrey tournament is being held as the final preparation event ahead of the year’s final Grand Slam, the US Open.
