Marsaxlokk 2–0 Birkirkara

Marsaxlokk moved to the top of the VBET Malta Premier standings after two second-half goals secured a 2-0 victory over Birkirkara at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Goals from Matias Garcia and Ulises Arias handed Enzo Potenza’s side three valuable points, taking their tally to 17, one ahead of Valletta, who have a game in hand against Sliema Wanderers on Saturday.

Birkirkara, meanwhile, suffered their second successive defeat and remain on ten points, with their task made more difficult by the dismissal of Fernandinho midway through the second half.

Marsaxlokk coach Potenza retained his regular starting eleven, while Birkirkara counterpart Paul Zammit made four changes following the defeat against Valletta, introducing Jake Vassallo, Kemar Reid, Louis Pahama and Fernandinho.

The Stripes made a promising start and threatened after seven minutes when Pahama headed a cross into the path of Reid, whose effort was turned behind by goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi. Zach Muscat subsequently headed wide from the resulting corner.

Marsaxlokk responded through Dodo, whose effort was saved by Fabrice Ondoa, before Rasmus Linden fired narrowly wide from an angled position.

Both goalkeepers were called into action during the opening half, with Mafoumbi comfortably dealing with a long-range attempt by Pablo Gabriel, while Ondoa produced a fine save to deny Arias from a free-kick.

Birkirkara almost broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval when Vassallo, set up by Reid, sent a rising effort narrowly over the target.

The Stripes continued to threaten after the restart, with Mafoumbi producing another important save from Pablo Gabriel’s free-kick in the 52nd minute.

However, Marsaxlokk struck two minutes later when Dodo released Garcia down the right, and the latter beat Ondoa with a powerful rising shot from a tight angle.

Birkirkara’s hopes of a comeback suffered a major setback shortly after the hour when Fernandinho received a second yellow card following a dangerous challenge on Garcia.

Marsaxlokk capitalised on their numerical advantage and doubled their lead in the 71st minute. Dodo was again the provider, delivering from the right for Arias to slot past Ondoa and put the result beyond doubt.

The victory strengthened Marsaxlokk’s position among the leading contenders in the Opening Round, while Birkirkara were left searching for a response following another disappointing result.

Marsaxlokk: Matias Garcia 54′, Ulises Arias 71′.

Birkirkara: Fernandinho sent off (second yellow card).

Venue: Victor Tedesco Stadium.
