After extra time; 1-1 after 90 minutes

Mġarr United won the Assikura Women’s Super Cup for the first time in their history after defeating ten-player Swieqi United 4-1 following extra time at the Centenary Stadium on Friday.

The teams remained level after 90 minutes, but Mġarr took command in extra time as Yulya Carella completed her brace before Alejandra Villegas Caly and Yanina Ayelen Mendez sealed an emphatic victory.

Mġarr created the first notable chance after 12 minutes when Carella met a lobbed pass but failed to make clean contact, sending the ball wide.

Swieqi broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Valentina Rapa got on the end of a lofted pass and headed beyond goalkeeper Giulia D’Antuono.

The Owls almost doubled their lead in the 35th minute, but Sara Saliba’s long-range effort struck the woodwork.

Mġarr responded four minutes later. After initially being denied by Patricia Araujo Da Silva, Carella found the net from the left to restore parity before half-time.

Both sides sought a breakthrough after the interval, with Swieqi enjoying spells of possession while Mġarr remained dangerous on the counterattack.

In the 60th minute, Carella released Carlyn Eleanor Presley, whose pass found Amber Grech, but the latter sent her effort well wide. Five minutes later, Carella controlled Presley’s cross superbly before narrowly missing the target.

Mġarr went even closer in the 82nd minute when Eva Renee Marie Maizeroi Chaina’s cross reached Presley, whose stretched effort struck the post.

With the score still locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match moved into extra time.

Carella put Mġarr ahead in the 96th minute, cutting inside from the left before curling a fine effort in off the post.

Swieqi’s task became considerably harder four minutes later when Jade Flask received a second yellow card for a foul on Carella and was sent off.

Mġarr capitalised on their numerical advantage in the closing stages. Villegas Caly dispossessed the Swieqi defence and made it 3-1 in the 110th minute before Mendez converted the rebound from a saved shot three minutes later.

Presley was named Player of the Match.
