Mosta continued their remarkable start to the 2026-27 VBet Malta Premier season with a 1-0 victory over Birkirkara, maintaining their 100 per cent record after three matches.

Ernest Agyiri scored the decisive goal midway through the first half to secure Mosta’s third successive win and move the Blues to the top of the Premier League standings.

It was a deserved victory for Mosta, who once again displayed plenty of character and resilience, while their physical strength and pace caused Birkirkara problems throughout the match.

The result also confirmed that Mosta’s earlier victories over Ħamrun Spartans and Balzan were no coincidence, with the Blues emerging as potential contenders for a place in the Top Six following the opening round.

Birkirkara, meanwhile, produced a disappointing performance and struggled to impose themselves on the match.

The Stripes created several opportunities, particularly in the early stages, but their failure to make the most of them ultimately proved costly against a clinical Mosta side.

Birkirkara started brightly and could have taken the lead after nine minutes when Amarildo Jr raced past two defenders before sending his effort wide.

Two minutes later, Fernandinho tested David Akpan with a curling effort which the Mosta goalkeeper turned behind for a corner. From the resulting set piece, Franklin Sasere fired wide.

Mosta remained dangerous on the counter-attack and took the lead in the 31st minute.

Charles Oderinde delivered a cross towards the far post, where Ernest Agyiri arrived to slide the ball past the diving Fabrice Ebogo and put Mosta ahead.

Birkirkara struggled to recover from the setback, while Mosta defended resolutely and continued to match their opponents physically.

The Stripes increased the pressure after the restart and came close to an equaliser in the 54th minute. Amarildo burst into the penalty area and, after his first attempt was blocked, saw his follow-up effort drift narrowly wide.

Amarildo missed another excellent opportunity shortly after the hour mark when he reacted quickest to a rebound but fired well over from a central position.

Mosta then came close to doubling their advantage in the 63rd minute. Ogyiri broke clear on the right and sent a low cross across the face of goal, but Peter Ohaka failed to make contact with the ball with only Ebogo to beat.

Giancarlo Goncalves also went close for Mosta when he created space on the edge of the area, but his shot went wide.

Birkirkara had another opportunity 13 minutes from time when substitute Jan Busuttil found himself in a promising position just a few metres from goal, but he fired wide.

The Stripes pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages, but despite their territorial pressure, they struggled to seriously threaten Akpan.

Mosta held firm to secure another important three points and continue their perfect start to the season.
