Newcastle United have strengthened their squad with the signing of Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga, with the 24-year-old putting pen to paper on a five-year contract, the Premier League club confirmed on Monday.

Hornicek joins the Magpies in a deal reportedly worth €30.6 million, completing another significant addition ahead of the new season. The goalkeeper made his senior debut for the Czech Republic in May and is regarded as one of the country’s brightest talents.

Speaking after completing the move, Hornicek admitted the transfer had been an emotional experience.

“The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster from when I first heard about the move, and now I’m so happy to be here,” he said.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity to play in a new league, and I’m really excited about it. From the moment I arrived, everyone at the club has made me feel incredibly welcome and helped me settle in.”

The goalkeeper also spoke about his excitement at representing Newcastle in front of the club’s passionate supporters.

“I know Newcastle is a huge football city. Playing in front of more than 52,000 fans at St James’ Park is something every player dreams of, and I can’t wait to experience that atmosphere.”

Hornicek arrives on Tyneside after an outstanding season with Braga, where he played a key role in the club’s run to the Europa League semi-finals. He recorded seven clean sheets during the competition, the highest tally of any goalkeeper in the tournament.

The Czech shot-stopper first joined Braga on loan from Pardubice in 2019 before making the move permanent. After several years of development, he established himself as the Portuguese club’s first-choice goalkeeper in 2025.

Hornicek also earned a place in the Czech Republic squad for the World Cup in North America. Although he did not feature during the tournament, his inclusion highlighted his rapid rise at international level.

Newcastle will hope Hornicek’s arrival adds greater competition and quality to their goalkeeping department as they prepare for another demanding Premier League campaign.
