Mexico’s phenomenal FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign shows no signs of slowing down. Javier Aguirre’s men put on a clinic at the Mexico City Stadium, easing into the Round of 16 with a dominant 2-0 victory over Ecuador to maintain their flawless tournament record.

With a raucous home crowd cheering them on, El Tri proved too hot to handle, channeling a one-hour weather delay into pure, explosive energy on the pitch.

Lightning-Fast Start Sparks Delirium

The storm that delayed kick-off did nothing to dampen Mexico’s fire. From the opening whistle, the co-hosts tore out of the traps, unleashing a relentless barrage on the Ecuadorian defense. Gilberto Mora, Luis Romo, and Raúl Jiménez all had clear-cut chances to break the deadlock within the first 15 minutes.

Just nine minutes later, the stadium erupted again. Quiñones turned provider, turning his defender and teeing up Raúl Jiménez, who made no mistake in doubling El Tri’s advantage.

Remarkably, Mexico’s only previous World Cup win against South American opposition in 14 attempts also came against Ecuador back in 2002—a match where Javier Aguirre was also at the helm. History repeated itself beautifully as Aguirre’s men shut the door in the second half with an incredibly assured defensive display.

The rearguard was expertly marshalled by César Montes and Johan Vásquez, both of whom nearly scored themselves with powerful headers from corners. Behind them stood goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, who extended his extraordinary tournament record to four consecutive clean sheets.

Ecuador’s frustrating evening unraveled completely deep into stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapié was shown a straight red card following a heated exchange with Mexico forward Santiago Giménez.
