Marsaxlokk begin their UEFA Conference League campaign with a difficult first qualifying round encounter against Armenian side Pyunik, as the two clubs prepare to meet for the first time in their history.

The Maltese outfit enjoyed an impressive domestic season under the guidance of Enzo Potenza, finishing runners-up in the Maltese Premier League behind champions Floriana to secure a place in European competition. Marsaxlokk will now be hoping to translate that domestic success onto the continental stage after struggling in previous UEFA campaigns, having lost each of their last five European ties.

Standing in their way are one of Armenia’s most established clubs. Pyunik reached the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League last season before being eliminated by Hungarian side ETO Győr, who went on to enjoy an excellent campaign. Domestically, Pyunik finished third in the Armenian Premier League and once again earned the opportunity to compete in Europe.

Although there is limited recent form data available for both teams, Pyunik possess greater European pedigree and experience at this level. Their familiarity with UEFA competition could prove decisive over two legs, particularly against a Marsaxlokk side still searching for a breakthrough result in European football.
