Real Madrid have completed the signing of teenage midfielder Sergio Martinez from Racing Santander for a reported €3 million ($3.5 million).

Racing Santander confirmed the transfer on Monday, revealing that Real Madrid will activate the 19-year-old’s release clause in full.

“Real Madrid will pay the full amount set as the footballer’s contract release clause,” Racing said in a statement on social media.

Martinez made headlines by scoring for Racing Santander against Villarreal in their opening La Liga fixture, but the highly rated teenager is expected to begin his Real Madrid career with the club’s reserve team as he continues his development.

The move is another example of Real Madrid’s strategy of investing in promising young talent, with the Spanish giants adding several players to their squad during the summer transfer window.

Among their notable arrivals is record signing Yan Diomande, as Los Blancos look to strengthen their squad after going two seasons without winning a major trophy.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have made an impressive start to the new campaign, winning all three of their opening La Liga matches.

The arrival of Martinez is expected to give the club another exciting young prospect to develop as they continue to build for the future.
