Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been convicted of drink-driving in Gran Canaria, with a court source confirming the verdict to AFP on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old centre-back was found to have been driving at more than three times the legal alcohol limit. He was subsequently fined €14,400 and handed an eight-month driving licence suspension.

Asencio was convicted following a trial in San Bartolome de Tirajana, a municipality in Gran Canaria, after the incident occurred on August 16.

The Real Madrid defender, who was born in the Canary Islands, was not part of Jose Mourinho’s squad at the time as he was still recovering from a hamstring injury suffered at the end of July.

However, Asencio is set to return to court this week in a separate case concerning the alleged non-consensual sharing of a sexual video dating back to 2023.

According to reports in the Spanish media, Asencio expects to be cleared in that case if the two women who appeared in the video formally forgive him.

Three former Real Madrid reserve players are also facing trial over allegations that they recorded and distributed the video. The proceedings are scheduled to take place on September 3, 4 and 7.
