Sainz hit with three-place grid penalty at Spanish GP

Carlos Sainz will start his home Spanish Grand Prix from the back of the grid after being handed a three-place penalty for impeding Valtteri Bottas during Saturday’s qualifying session.

The Williams driver was investigated for getting in the way of Bottas’ Cadillac through Turns 6 and 7 during the opening phase of qualifying.

The stewards ruled that Sainz had unnecessarily impeded Bottas after his team failed to warn him that the Cadillac driver was approaching on a flying lap.

“The team failed to inform the driver of Car 55 about Car 77 closing in on a flying lap and the driver did not take any action to make way for the incoming car,” the FIA said in a statement.

“The Stewards determine that Car 55 unnecessarily impeded Car 77.”

As a result, Sainz drops to 20th on the starting grid for Sunday’s 57-lap race, while fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, along with Cadillac’s Sergio Perez and Bottas, each move up one position.

The race will be particularly significant as it marks the first Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Madring, the new circuit hosting the Spanish round.

Frustrating Season Continues for Sainz

The penalty adds to what has already been a difficult campaign for Sainz in his first season with Williams.

The former Ferrari driver and four-time Grand Prix winner currently sits 16th in the F1 Drivers’ Championship with just six points, while Williams occupy ninth place in the 11-team Constructors’ Championship.

Starting from 20th will make Sunday’s home race an even tougher challenge for Sainz, who will be hoping to fight his way through the field in front of his home fans.

Norris Takes Pole by Just 0.011 Seconds

At the front of the grid, reigning Formula 1 champion Lando Norris secured pole position for McLaren with a stunning final qualifying lap.

Norris edged Mercedes driver and championship leader Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds to claim the top spot for Sunday’s inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring.

The incredibly tight qualifying battle sets up an intriguing race, while Sainz faces the difficult task of recovering from the rear of the field on home soil.
