Sandro Micallef has formally resigned from the Executive Committee of the Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA), bringing an end to more than 18 years of voluntary service within the organisation.

The resignation, officially submitted on 5th April 2026, marks the conclusion of a long and influential chapter for one of Malta’s most recognisable figures in sports journalism.

In his resignation letter, Micallef also offered to oversee a full handover process in order to ensure a smooth transition for the Association’s incoming administration. He explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to allow the current leadership the freedom and independence to operate without the perceived influence of his continued presence.

Micallef had previously served as Honorary President two years ago and, following the last Annual General Meeting, returned as an elected member of the Executive Committee.

Throughout his lengthy tenure, he occupied several important roles within the Association. He first served as an ordinary committee member before taking on the role of General Secretary for four years. He later served as President between 2017 and 2024, a period widely regarded as one of significant development and modernisation for the MSJA.

Among his most notable achievements was the transformation of the Association’s flagship event, the Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali. Under his leadership, the annual awards ceremony evolved into a financially self-sustainable and professionally recognised national sporting occasion.

Micallef also paid tribute to several long-time collaborators who worked closely alongside him throughout the years, including Charles Camenzuli, Lorraine Cunningham and Clinton Buhagiar, while expressing gratitude to all colleagues who contributed to the Association’s work and success.

Despite stepping down from the Executive Committee, Micallef confirmed that he will remain actively supportive of the Association by continuing to attend future Annual General Meetings, Extraordinary General Meetings and official events.

He concluded by wishing the Malta Sports Journalists Association and its new President, Antvin Monseigneur, every success for the future as the organisation begins a new chapter.
