Stefan Sanderra set to step down as Ħamrun Spartans coach due to health reasons

Ħamrun Spartans are set to make an unexpected change to their technical staff, with head coach Stefan Sanderra expected to resign from his position due to health reasons.
According to information confirmed to this portal, the 59-year-old Italian has informed the club’s administration that, despite his reluctance, he intends to step down for health-related reasons just weeks after taking charge of the Maltese champions.
While no details regarding Sanderra’s condition have been disclosed out of respect for his privacy, the club acknowledged that it appears increasingly unlikely that he will continue his brief spell at Ħamrun Spartans.
The news reportedly came as a major shock within the club, with players said to have been deeply disappointed after quickly adapting to Sanderra’s professional approach and methods since his arrival.
Sanderra was appointed head coach on June 26, succeeding Giacomo Modica following the latter’s departure from the club.
The Italian is no stranger to Maltese football, having previously managed Hibernians between July 2018 and July 2022. During that spell, he established himself as one of the league’s most respected coaches, guiding the Paolites to the Malta Premier League title at the end of the 2021/22 season.
His appointment at Ħamrun Spartans was viewed as a significant coup for the reigning champions, but less than a month later his tenure now appears set to come to an early conclusion.
It is understood that discussions between Sanderra and the club are ongoing, although his decision is believed to be final and based entirely on what is in the best interests of his health.
Ħamrun Spartans have already begun the search for a replacement as they prepare for the new domestic season.
The development comes during what has already been a difficult start to the campaign for the Spartans, who recently suffered a dramatic elimination from the UEFA Conference League.
