Valletta aim to extend lead against Sliema Wanderers

Valletta FC will be looking to maintain their position at the top of the Malta Premier League standings when they face Sliema Wanderers in what promises to be an interesting encounter.
Valletta currently lead the table with 16 points, while Sliema occupy sixth place with 11 points. Both sides will be eager to collect valuable points, with Valletta aiming to strengthen their position at the summit and Sliema hoping to close the gap on the league leaders.
Valletta head into the match in positive spirits following a 2-0 victory over Birkirkara in their previous outing. The Citizens have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, recording a 71 per cent win rate in the league so far. They will be keen to build on this momentum and secure another important result.
Sliema Wanderers, meanwhile, come into the encounter after a 1-1 draw against Gżira United. The Wanderers have shown encouraging form away from home, winning two of their last four league matches on the road. However, they will face a difficult challenge against a Valletta side that has made an impressive start to the season.
The historical record between the two clubs also favours Valletta, who have registered 29 victories in 54 league meetings against Sliema Wanderers. Nevertheless, previous results will count for little once the two sides take to the pitch.
Sliema will also have to cope without Teddy Teuma, who is suspended for this fixture. His absence could prove significant as the Wanderers look to compete against the league leaders.
With Valletta enjoying home advantage and arriving on the back of a convincing win, they may start as favourites. However, Sliema have the quality to make the contest competitive, and a closely fought encounter could end with the points being shared.
Prediction: A draw is considered the most likely outcome.
