The member clubs of the Malta Premier League have reached a unanimous agreement to reform the gate revenue distribution system following weeks of intense negotiations. The historic reform changes a mechanism that had remained largely unchanged for decades, modernizing the league’s financial structure.

Under the new model, clubs that attract the largest number of supporters will be rewarded directly, as they are now allowed to retain the gate income generated by their own fans. This merit-based approach aims to encourage teams to invest more heavily in fan engagement and actively work toward increasing matchday attendances. At the same time, the system retains an element of solidarity among all member clubs to ensure financial merit balances with collective support across the league.

In tandem with the revenue distribution changes, the clubs agreed to completely abolish complimentary VIP tickets. Starting this season, no complimentary cards will be issued, making all season and VIP cards strictly subject to payment. This decision is intended to reduce the culture of complimentary access and maximize matchday revenues.

The reform initiative was spearheaded by Dr. Joseph Muscat and Alan Abela, who consistently advocated for the structural updates. Both worked closely with the individual clubs to build the consensus necessary for implementation, driven by the belief that a sustainable, incentive-based model will ultimately strengthen the league and encourage clubs to grow their supporter bases.
