Congo DR completed a sensational comeback to secure progression to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup™ for the first time in their history, as a second-half blitz delivered a historic 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at Atlanta Stadium.

The monumental win ensures Congo DR’s path forward as one of the tournament’s best third-place finishers, setting up a highly anticipated Round of 32 clash against England right back in Atlanta on July 1. Meanwhile, debutants Uzbekistan exit the global stage without a point.

Early Shomurodov Spark

Following back-to-back defeats, Uzbekistan were clearly intent on claiming a positive result to close out their maiden World Cup campaign, and the White Wolves thought they had taken an incredible lead after just 20 seconds. While that lightning effort from Eldor Shomurodov was ruled out for offside, the talismanic forward would not be denied for long.

In the 10th minute, Shomurodov got the celebrations for his upcoming 31st birthday started a couple of days early by looping a delicious finish into the net from a tight angle to break the deadlock.

The frantic pace continued, and just seven minutes later it was Congo DR’s turn to have an effort disallowed, as Nathanaël Mbuku’s precise strike was chalked off following a foul in the build-up. Shomurodov almost doubled Uzbekistan’s advantage early in the second half with another delicate attempt, but his 51st-minute effort dropped harmlessly onto the roof of the net.

The Comeback Charge

As the match wore on, Congo DR began to heavily dictate the tempo and apply relentless pressure on the Uzbek backline. Their efforts paid off in the 68th minute when Yoane Wissa stepped up to confidently draw them level from the penalty spot.

With momentum firmly on their side, Congo DR grabbed the lead ten minutes later through an inspired pair of tactical changes. Substitutes combined beautifully as Meschack Elia’s initial shot was deflected into the path of Fiston Mayele, who applied just enough of a connection to cleverly dink the loose ball over the onrushing Abduvohid Nematov.

With Uzbekistan pushing forward in desperation, Wissa put the icing on the cake deep into injury time, capitalizing on open space to curl an excellent finish home from the edge of the box to seal the 3-1 triumph.

With Colombia and Portugal occupying the top two automatic spots, Congo DR comfortably advances from third place with a healthy four points, while Uzbekistan finishes bottom of the section.
